re-jammed this today for the first time in a while. clicked in a way it hadn't before

my displeasure with the production choices distracted me from the fact this thing is easily as thematically dense as his earlier work, arguably even more so.

this really peaks in the first five tracks tho, and still feel like disc 2 is made up of mostly subpar songs... but i appreciate what kendrick is going for on here a lot more than i did

Can we let a mid album rest. The discourse on this album is almost as boring as the record.

nah whether you like the album or not i think this is a pretty fascinating album to talk about lol

coming off the damn/black panther era, it very much seemed like he had fully transitioned to making "stadium rap". i think sonically that notion is even more amplified on this album... except this time kendrick is baring his soul on like every track here. some of the most uncomfortable rap verses you'll ever hear.

dude made an insanely head-y, mature, overly personal record aimed at the lowest common denominator. one could argue he's been doing that his whole career, but not at this extreme. think this was a pretty brave album to put out at this point of his career... dude's legend was already completely cemented, so instead of riding that out for the rest of his life he decides it's time to tell everyone he's actually not who we think he is!

drake framing all this as a "1 v 20" though is pretty brilliant though cause like no matter what happens he can just say "i was responding to 10 guys at once idk man"

reminded me of no vasaline with all the TDE stuff and telling metro to to back to making drums lmaoo.

good to see you comin around alex, the record is a bit bloated, but there's quite a lot of damage being unpacked here

Disc 2 has Savior, Mr. Morale and Count Me Out, huge highlights of the record so I can't agree there. But I needed a lot of time to come around and like most of that stuff. Oh and Silent Hill's fantastic too

best points in the Drake diss are that people only diss Drake to make money/be relevant for a second, and Kendrick has no room to talk about selling out when he has features with friggin maroon 5 and Taylor swift

i think he straight up cooked future and metro and ross. i'm sorry there's just no retort for "i know my picture on your wall when yall cooked up". let alone all the other stuff he said about them. absolutely none. also love the cole footnote lmao.

he went at kendrick way harder than i ever imagined he could honestly. really twisting the knife with all those tde / top dawg lines. that stuff has been kinda speculated on for years but i think this is the first time its really been brought to light. been reading that "drop and give me 50" is in reference to the 50mil kendrick apparently had to pay to buy himself out of tde??? something along those lines

not something i don't think kendrick can come back from... but damn i have a lot more respect for drake than i did this time last week

I cannot believe that drake track is as good as it is but I also don’t believe for one second that every one of those lines is his. I mean he’s like Kanye right? Like as in it’s pretty much an open secret that he has an army of ghost writers lol
