Crippled Black Phoenix' The Resurrectionists/Night Raider is also a great example of a double album. Someone mentioned Ellengaest above so I remembered this one.

My second favorite of theirs is The Great Escape, do check that one! Though they've been consistently great from the start IMO, bar a few albums like Bronze that aren't that amazing.

Ellengaest worked great because of the different singer features. The two songs they released later with the new singer weren't on the same lvl so I am cautiously hyped about the new one.
Same thing with this album, the variation in vocals really help to patch that length into smth easier to digest.
tl;dr variation good 👍

the double has a few excellent songs but flogs a lot of not particularly interesting ideas well past their welcome. worth a once-through, but it ain't the one
still better than mellon collie though *puke emoji*

Controlling Crowds
You all Look the Same to Me
Noise
With Us Until You're Dead
Restriction
imho
CC is pretty much already a three (!!!) piece concept album, so I don't get all the excitement (as if they did not have a magnum opus already in the discography...)

Lol this is leagues ahead of CC, although CC does have some great songs

I like this, though not nearly as much as I expected. Like, 6 or 7 tracks here didn't do much of anything for me. The other stuff ranged from passable to pretty damn good so I'm kinda torn on the rating. The vocals got pretty grating at times, either because of repetition or harmonizing that didn't work for me. On the other hand, their female singer easily caught my attention when they let her do her thing by herself.
Personally, I feel this is not up to par like their best releases (You All Look the Same to Me - Controlling Crowds stretch) but it's hard to fault its ambition and some of the good stuff they offer here. So I think I'll settle for a 3.5 for now.

I mean the average speaks for itself, so it's apparent that I must have from a wide-reaching objective standpoint. Still, that doesn't change my opinion of this at all. I love it and think it's incredibly well-done, eclectic, mysteriously complex...this particular atmosphere/vibe is exactly my thing, and the balance between foggy ethereal piano stuff and more catchy/uptempo rock is flawless to me.

Thanks for your review. Couldn't choose the words better myself.
This album is one of the best ever made in the last 10 years. And I mean not just by Archive, but any band or collective.
I don't know any band that can compose such different styles, melodies, sound experiments, lyrics on one album. Lets not forget the beautiful voices of all the singers in the band. Most people I speak have difficulties to handle the style-spread Archive put in one album. I think it enriches your mind when you take the time to digest what you hear. It is almost impossible to comprehend what you hear by listening the album just ones or twice.
For me the best song is Gold. When this song has finished the first thing you ask yourself: how did we get here? How on earth can someone compose a song where you are guided from a modest and subdued start to an epic end. Looking forward to see and hear them again end 2022. By the way: I read the word mainstream in the review. One thing that is not Archive: mainstream.
