Man if some people thought this had a case of "we live in a society" they should go listen to the new Arcade Fire. Yikes.

I didn’t have any problems getting to the end, but I still don’t know what to think of this yet

Well once you settle on the 4.5 or 5 that you're torn between, let me know. ;-)

Too much extra art shit in this one, but good overall

Nah this album is incredible. I had serious reservations at first but it gets better with each listen

Thank you. Hopefully more folks will see the light.
It's not a quick, easy, and digestible listen. It's not meant to be.

i feel like for many people these hugely ambitious, longer albums usually fall by the wayside. reminds me of when dewinged reviewed Ellengaest (a spectacular album you should check out if you haven't yet) and it didn't get much buzz at first. ended up getting like 200 ratings i think, which is nothing rly

once the back half of the album opened up for me i really fell in love with this. i think the challenge most people will have is the first 4 songs are so accessible that the shift from that to ambient/experimental can seem very jarring

this will be a 5 soon enough

There are a lot of amazing moments on this but it could have been a great deal shorter

what songs are you guys digging the most? for me: mr daisy, fear, shouting within, daytime coma, head heavy, every single day, we are the same, everything's alright and gold

Varies. Depends on my mood and when/where i listen. Right now: shouting within, daytime coma and all that i have. Also love the hard hitting synths in enemy with the volyme cranked up.

Most of the songs I liked on this have already grown off me a little, v much starting to see this as the kind of bloated songwriting x shallow politics that no one will remember this time next yr
but it has enough vanilla alt rock gloss that i might be wrong

Definitely depends on my mood as well, but for me it's Surrounded By Ghosts (seriously what a stunner), Mr Daisy, Shouting Within (probably my personal favorite), Daytime Coma, Every Single Day, and Freedom.
But every song has its place.
@jotw we definitely have different ideas of vanilla alt-rock

Would this be a good place to start with this band? I didn't realize they had so many albums lol

I don't see why not. Just be prepared for the long haul; or if a 103 minute slow-grower of an album doesn't sound appetizing then maybe just go for some of the highlights people are mentioning above.

Gotcha. I'm more of a full-album guy, so I'll check the whole thing out. I used to hate long double/triple albums, but I've been warming up to them more recently

Me too. We've been seeing a lot of them lately in the pandemic aftermath so that helps.

For me, it's mostly because I finally found the best qualities of some of the double records I dismissed when I was younger, namely Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis and Mellon Collie by Smashing Pumpkins. I started likening them to movies; maybe there's filler here and there, but the incredible highlights make the whole journey worthwhile

there's always been a ton of great double albums, but most of the best ones are relatively rarely discussed as such because they're strong enough not to be defined by their length or bloat
to which end mellon collie and this are v much double albums
