this band always made me feel down, not uplifted when i listened back in the day, songs like ''Lay it Down Slow'' are real downers. Despite the sort of 'hopeful' lyrical subjects the band usually have, it all seems very desperate to me. There's also something 'cinematic' about the band like I could imagine some of this stuff played in TV Drama shows.
It's all a bit much and definitely have to be in the mood for the band.
but I've only heard the 'Amazing Grace' album and two or so tracks from 'Ladies and gentlemen...''

Yeah, even behind the heavier tracks there are usually bittersweet lyrics. They don't have a "happy" record.

Finally listening to this, but fuck that high pitched sound that starts the album???

It is meant to ward off those with inferior ear drums.

It's a signal to warn you that this album is boring as hell

This wasn't that boring, but also wasn't anything that special

Is it on the Switch SNES emulator? I know I have it on my SNES classic but I have no idea where I stashed that bad boy and I don't feel like looking for it.
Super Mario World will always been the crowning achievement of the Mario franchise but I do have a soft spot for Yoshi's Island. Staple of my childhood. I remember seven-year-old me being so proud when I figured out you had to bank the eggs of the wall to hit that Boss Piranha Plant's neck area. Good times.

3.5 is a generous score for "nothing special" 😯

perhaps less so when your average is basically a 4

I don't game much these days but I can only assume it is, give it's a Nintendo title and it's pretty popular

Another godly game for sure, and hehehe that piranha plant trick is something I learned a bit too late in life

Literally, 3.5 to me is that it's an enjoyable listen, but I'd rather listen to my 4's >

Best album since Let It Come Down and possibly in my top three but need to let it settle before I commit. Never expected to rate another Spiritualized album above 3.5 again so a wonderful surprise to hear this

Lazer Guided Melodies>Ladies and Gentlemen>Pure Phase>Let It Come Down>Everything was Beautiful>Sweet Heart Sweet Light>And Nothing Hurt>Songs in A&E>Amazing Grace
That will do for now. Not sure about Pure Phase position. Might need to be lower. Spacemen 3 nostalgia possibly clouding my view.

My only grievance with this album is that all the songs are very organic and stick to the same gospel/blues template and at under 45 minutes it could have done with a bit more of their orchestral flourishes, fuzzed guitar psychedelics and spacey keyboard atmospherics, just to lift the album a bit and give it some depth and room to breathe. And also just get rid of Crazy - really drags the album down. Very bland.

i had no idea this existed, last i knew And Nothing Hurt was the end of the road for Spiritualized. and yes, Yoshi's Island is still a masterpiece. finished another playthrough of it a few months ago.
