That makes sense.

I just want to throw it all in the bin for reasons not necessarily limited to the way these bands sound. Pretty hard to get a nostalgia kick when you don't want to remember any of it.

Yeah man. It's independent of the artist for me. There's certainly a stylistic overlap that this group have with other, similar groups.

But I don't have a personal relationship with this group like others might, so I can't really comment on that, to be fair.

I think nostalgia will always motivate listeners but also artists. Seems wild now but the music I grew up seeing on TV is now a retro aesthetic appreciated by a younger generation. 90s and early 2000s pastiche is growing in popularity a lot now, in the same way we've seen 60s, 70s and 80s nostalgia.

I realise the above comment was misleading because of what happened with Watkins... not actually what I meant.

I find it hard to generate nostalgia for a time I don't want to remember, essentially. So a lot of my fave childhood bands have been lost through (possibly) no fault of the actual music. Sometimes it can be hard to separate the two (as a lot of isn't my thing now anyway), but it certainly doesn't always benefit from those memories.

Oh I know, I know. I wasn't implying anything by that. Just my own experience.

But like I said, for me it's... some of it is lost to me and some isn't, or maybe it has a different resonance than it did before. A lot of the emo music I would have once listened to has been adapted into other artists, and some of it I still enjoy a lot. I loved and still love Motion City Soundtrack. I dont listen to much Fall Out Boy anymore but I find a lot of their melodic rock in American Football (A group I didn't know of when I was young).

I felt the need to clarify, that's cool.

Adapting historic musical needs / desires to newly discovered artists then? I like that concept. It mostly happens outside of our consciousness (I assume), unless comparisons can be made like in the case you outlined above.

Personally I will probably always need some 'emo' music in my life, but what that actually means from a stylistic perspective has certainly changed quite considerably over time.

It's definitely a fun thing to think about. For example, going back as far as you can to see how music you listened to as a child may have introduced you to particular musical concepts. Probably the earliest music I bought as a child on cassette had verse-chorus structures, harmonies, and general 4/4 rhythm. Kids bop, but you know, it still gave me an early feel for what Western music is. And it grows outward from there.

First two Lostprophets albums are good, rest sucks

Liberation Transmission has a killer opener. Everyday Combat would've been one of the best songs on this.

But the rest, while at times catchy enough, doesn't touch this at all. I remember being so disappointed at the time.

Shitty Jared Leto-core written by a literal baby fucker. I don’t think it’s possible to separate art from the artist here without being on a watchlist. No fucking thank you

Yeah it's really difficult to separate this from the singer unfortunately. I love this album and it's really frustrating.

i bought liberation transmission via itunes when it first came out, and so it's been on any apple device i've had since 2006. even though i know i can listen to it w/o contributing money through streams to the band, it is just absolutely ruined for me. i can listen to music from pretty much any problematic artist (helloooo black metal fan) but there are no really words to describe what kind of monster ian is.
