i saw someone in the soundoffs complain about the "over the top drumming." Would you prefer one of the better drummers alive take the Lars Ulrich approach? GTFOH.

Yeah I’m more in line with Alex.

Also, to me Matt is the only one that makes this album even remotely engaging. Which is ironic cause I do think he’s typically over the top

yeah i'm disappointed they've almost completely dropped the jazz fusion elements of their sound here. basically a full on djent album.

i can listen to Garstka play drums all day tho... he's been the best part of the band since he's joined no complaints here

monomyth is prob my fave track as of now

yah i was expecting them to go further down the jazz road until monomyth came out. i can understand metal drums better than jazz guitar lol so i'm not upset. i think all their albums get better with more listens. joy and s/t are the two albums of theirs i've listened to the most

are ppl downvoting me bc they disagree with my opinion or bc i dont compare the album to the band's previous work or because i'm obviously just a big fan or because the track by track gets a little too specific about portions of various songs?

i dont typically write reviews. someone help me get more internet points next time

I would agree with Joy > S/T > MoM > > this > Weightless

"Monomyth" kinda sticks in my mind but not much else.

But I'll also admit that this album is simply too difficult, too dense for the average Sputnikmusic Ebert slash Roeper like me to comprehend.

In general, people don't like track by tracks because they tend to just be dry descriptions of songs without any kind of interesting opinion or critique. Think of it as an art critic critiquing Da Vinci's Mona Lisa by saying "It's a painting of a woman. She's wearing a dress and is smiling slightly. It's a good painting." Pretty pointless, right?

Next time, ask yourself not just "what" questions but "why" questions too. Like, for instance, why are you writing a review? Why do like or dislike the song or album? Why is a particular rhythm or guitar riff interesting? And so on.

Also, keep in mind that people have limited attention spans and no one is going to read a detailed qualitative critique of every song on an album, no matter how good the writing. That's why most good reviews tend to discuss albums as a whole, while only going into detail about a few noteworthy songs. It's a good idea to read some of the other reviews to see how other writers balance these things.

sorry but this review really doesn't do much for someone unfamiliar with all the jargon you're using.

this wasn't the worst record but not their best by far. Like some parts but it felt pretty wonky
