I gave this a cursory listen last week and it was alright, so not surprised about Jesper's rating. Great write up too my dear. The summary is gold.

Hmm I have to say this album is better than it initially lets on to be. Subtly powerful cuts like Everyone and the lowkey intensity of Should've Been Me are super refreshing with the well-produced 80's vibe. A few unremarkable songs but I think it's still in the same league as her last couple

Could never get into Mitski. I tried all the way back during her Puberty albums.

I'll give this a few more listens but I'm underwhelmed so far. Cowboy was really good so that probably doesn't help.

a bit torn 'cause I like the cohesiveness on this (i actually wasn't so big on the jarring sequencing on 'be the cowboy', but it sure doesn't carry as many highlights as that one.

"As soon as the distorted guitars underscoring lead single ‘Working for the Knife’ threaten to culminate in a satisfying conclusion, the song ends. As soon as ‘Everyone’ finally presents memorable melodies by way of some wonderfully detached keys, the song ends. As soon as the wistful ‘I Guess’ enters ethereal territories, it decides it’s better off as a semi-interlude and… you guessed it, the song ends."

lol, this is every mitski album

yeah, songs that feel half-finished are kind of mitski's signature. i guess it just feels more glaring on this album? idk.

also, the opening synths on "that's our lamp" are on some paul mccartney "wonderful christmastime" bullshit

I think people that are fans of Mitski should also just be fans of synthpop. Try doing that sometime
