Don’t listen to fogza! Or do. Gax5 is just too poppy, in my personal opinion, to sell you on a band whose appeal relies in part on reinvention. Girls Can Tell is a great fucking record, but it doesn’t do a good job of showcasing the studio magic that defines more than half of the band’s discography. Me, I’d say go for the misunderstood album (Trans), if only because it’s a synthesis of everything the band can do. It’s just as dependent on electronics and trickery as anything else they’ve done

True. I think they went a little too far towards the spectacular on TWMS, but it’s so easy to digest. Guess the main throughline in this thread so far is: Spoon defies consensus, if you’ve never listened to them before, you’re in for a treat or a shrug

@colton that's a v respectable favorite. the way it builds up and breaks through at the end, Daniel's howls, it captures a kind of triumph and self-assurance and swagger that is totally unique to their whole output

See, that's what always kept it in the middle for me. Because you're right, Kill the Moonlight is their Seinfeld moment, where the fictional Jerry gets asked to star in a show about himself, a show about nothing . . . the moment when aesthetics reflexively represent themselves. It's the a-ha moment. And for that, Kill the Moonlight *is the album that made Spoon*. But there's also something about that moment of total identification that, for me, works well but doesn't get my top marks. Because Kill the Moonlight is a sort of ground zero. Spoon are represented, but they're also effaced by their perfect representation. It's where they go from there, a magic run of albums founded on the Kill the Moonlight formula, that draws me in. Kill the Moonlight is technically perfect, I guess. But everything that followed gave them some room to breathe imagination into their vision

Ah, I don't get that, I feel they are communicating with absolute clarity and focus and it's thrilling. But each to their own

I came to this band with Hot Thoughts and loved that album. Also checked out They Want My Soul afterwards which I found equally intriguing but never explored further.

Based on that, what album should I sink my teeth into now? Except for this new one, of course.

@Flugmorph, I'd recommend any of Girls Can Tell, Kill The Moonlight, or Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga next

Pretty much...

The debut is quite different from their later stuff and kinda raw, has great moments but one of their weakest. A Series Of Sneaks is underrated in my book, and is kinda a transition into their "classic sound", but probably not an album to hear before some of the later ones.
