It’s certainly good and probably a grower, it’ll probably just take me some time to unravel it and distinguish it from their previous work. On the surface it’s pretty familiar.

Every song has a moment that sets it apart for me. Even non-highlights like 'All The Way Down' have those gorgeously subtle harmonicas and lines like There’s no one to pray to / Because you know who made you / And you can just ask me, or Whether you’re born or just theorized / You’re still nothing but starlight / All the way down. 'Money Talks' with that bone chilling intro and the part about the doomsday clock with that drum fill, oh and the vampires of eden chorus...I could go on for every single track but I won't lol.

That's one of my favorite lines NorthernSkylark, it really brings out the mortal urgency of the record amid a lot of humorous anecdotes.

‘…the elder’
That bit creases me in ‘Be at Rest’, every time I forget he’s going to say it

He's drinking a drink that's black as ink,
watching a candied cherry sink,
it's like the sorrow of the world distilled

I can never tell if you're serious or not anymore, but if that 5 is for real then I'm glad. Such an incredible album that feels like the midpoint between Bob Dylan and The Decemberists that I never knew I wanted.

do you think these guys like bob dylan

What gave it away ;-)
I'm fine with artists being influenced by the greats, as long as they make it their own and show that they have heart/purpose behind the music (and aren't just retracing a formula for the aesthetic value). The Felice Brothers have done a little of both in their career if I'm being totally honest, but this is easily their greatest achievement [by my estimation] and is the most uniquely theirs.
I've probably listened to this 15-20 times already (which is seriously no exaggeration), and it somehow keeps gets better even after that many spins. I want to get this on vinyl. It's just got a classic elegance and rural charm that will sound incredible throughout the autumn and winter. Initially Silverfish and Celebrity X were my weak points preventing this from being a 5, but now I love them and feel like their inclusions are critical. It's been a long, long time since I've truly enjoyed every single song on an album, let alone a 12-track/55-minute one. Guys, this is just...something. I've literally been beaming all weekend because of this thing.

Calling them influenced by Bob Dylan is a super tired line, they’ve been at it for over 15 years and have a reputation of their own. Plus, as Sowing alludes to, what is most important is the quality of songwriting and these guys have repeatedly shown that they are capable of great work. Folk/country is the genre of theft anyways, as Dylan himself has consistently exemplified.

Well, I think they’ve got a lot more to offer than just sounding Dylan influenced here.
I’m less sure they always had a lot more to offer in the past but I’ll investigate the next couple of months.

Definitely agree. Just because the Dylan influences are apparent doesn't mean that's what defines the music. To each their own of course.

dylan comment was a light jab! never heard of these guys until today, not my thing but clearly talented song-writers
