Even the folks on the Lorde reddit are divided on this
Not a good sign when your most dedicated fanbase doesn't know what to think
I'm a huge Lorde fan (based on her first 2 albums, anyway), and to me this just reeks of an identity crisis. Clearly she has some stuff going on where she's struggling to deal with the level of fame that Melodrama brought her, and that's definitely reasonable, but I feel like the way she expresses it on this record is cringeworthy. It reminds me of the first time I had my heart broken and I wrote a bunch of "dark" poems that I thought were really good. Thank god I never shared them with anyone, because I read them again like a year later and it was some embarrassing stuff. This isn't that bad, but I do think she'll eventually look back at this and wonder why she ever did it (and not just because of the middling-to-poor critical reception).
