The production on this is absolutely incredible especially for the ‘70s - let’s be real, this sounds better than a lot of music being made today even. Compositionally it’s hard to fault too; it’s a lot more technical and fusion-y than before and everything they do just works. An absolute auditory treat, and yet there’s something about it that’s missing for me. I think my biggest issue with it is they’re going for a very particular style/mood, and while they nail it, it’s missing a lot of the variety that was so abundant on every album preceding it. Listening front to back can be super boring if I’m not in the right headspace for it.

this is by far the easiest steely Dan record to listen to front to back. Feels like 15 minutes because every note is used to maximum efficiency. ur boring

Funny enough, this is exactly what makes Aja is my favorite of theirs. Sure, there's more variety on previous records, but that also made the overall experience more inconsistent and scattershot (especially on Pretzel Logic). Aja still packs enough variation, while also being a much smoother and more uniform experience -- the best of both worlds imo

i think pretzel logic is better front to back than this album personally, but i get what you're saying. uniformity can be a good thing and it certainly makes this album sound distinct and true it's prob the most cohesive thing they've done

Thanks for sharing your rich knowledge of this band and their construction of this landmark album.
It's essential that this is passed down to acolytes such as my glistening, quivering self.
