The transitions on The Moor / Godhead’s Lament are peak prog death

this is holding up unexpectedly fantastically

but the Opeth are always (admittedly) a lil’ top heavy, so we’ll see

I love the back half of this actually! White Cluster is admittedly a bit weak, but the solo is worth the ride, and I love love love Serenity Painted Death

Yeah, I do love SPD it just feels like I could pick apart the rest if I wanted to. Their softer tendencies facilitate the necessary spacing between the heavier segments but I don’t think they standout much by themselves. There’s a tiny bit too much empty space here. The highlights absolutely hold up though!

You know, I completely agree! Too much empty space is the cardinal sin of Oldpeth, this could probably be five/ten minutes shorter and be even better.

My main nitpick with this album, however, is the way Mikael's voice gives out at the end of the scream at the start of The Moor sounds like my kitchen sink draining

Former fanboy seeking reconciliation here. You may have guessed by the username

Yeah, arguably Morningrise (for instance) is even more at fault but there’s just something charming about the unrefined nature of their earlier albums. This era is tighter in some ways yet highlights some minor limitations

Either way I still love this but Orchid is the one for me due to the medieval melodicism (gets me for some reason) / incomparable atmosphere

By this point the fellas had their formula down, which is why I guess I love Still Life so much, it feels like the meeting point between their oldest material and their mid-career. BWP and Deliverence in particular always felt a little mechanical to me and sometimes their long tracks drag where even ridiculously self-indulgent older Opeth songs like Black Rose Immortal don't. As repetative as Orchid is, I agree, its a surprisingly easy listen, plus I love the dancy bit in The Apostle in Triumph and the insanity of Into the Frost of Winter

Yeah, that song is amazing. Absolutely love the way the electric and acoustic guitars blend in the intro

Can't believe you think White Cluster is a bit weak Fowl. It's my second fav here, behind the Moor

"Orchid better than ghost reveries and blackwater park agreed".

I disagree. Both belong to my top four of the band with this one and Watershed.
