It’s part of the narrative - not saying it justifies the experience haha, but it’s “baked-in” to the concept

So nice to a see a new Opeth fan being spawned. They're so sweet at this stage.

'The moor is amazing but actually maybe one of the weaker tracks here? Benighted through Serenity Painted Death is just unbeatable for me'
The Moor was my introduction to this band, so I will always hold it in high regard. I can't imagine a more (moor?) perfect way to be inducted into the world of Opeth. And yeah their openers are god-tier, best in the game.

Still Life was my introduction as well. I certainly wasn’t blown away by it.
Far too much to unpick and let’s face it on the first few listens it all sounds EXACTLY the same.
It’s only when you start to unravel it all the magic reveals itself.

Exactly the same? I have to say I never got that impression from my initial foray into this.

Hahaha I knew this comment would be made eventually Ghandhi...
Also I get that too zak, about the sameness here. Don't know why it is more bothersome here than elsewhere in their discog, for you could easily make the same case for some of their other records.

Blackwater Park is waaaaaaaaaay more homogenous yet apparently that's a good thing because 'atmosphere' or something.

To me it isn't Demon. BWP suffers from homogeny about as much as this one. Perhaps that's one of the reasons why I don't like them as much as the others any more... Haven't figured out why the others overtook BWP and SL as my favourites. All is relative of course, both are still 4.5s in my book.

idk Trif I can't see this one being as homogenous as BWP, I definitely see some disparity between how distinct each album is. Early Opeth is my fave era, but this is an easy 3rd place whereas BWP is languishing down in 8th(ish).
Restraint isn't necessarily something that benefits this band weirdly (imo) and although BWP is tight, it lacks a certain spark captured by all of what preceded it. I don't put the two in the same category, despite the obvious comparisons due to the 'era' of Opeth they're rudimentarily assigned to.

The only reason I don't have BWP 5'd is because Harvest bores the shit out of me. I love all the other songs though

OH MY thanks DT, Harvest is my major issue with BWP as well!
BWP, next to Deliverance, might be their most 'robotic' (as far as that even applies to Opeth at all) sounding records. Sterile is way too strong a term, but there is a very slight part of BWP that fits the term. It might be a little distant or something? In the way it is produced? I don't know. Because the actual music is heartfelt for sure. "it lacks a certain spark" I really get this too. But it is not something that bothers me a lot.

Honestly, given Steven Wilson's work, that doesn't surprise me. I love his music, but his production work does have a tendency to sound pretty detached and artificial at times... which is strange, given the fact that his actual songwriting can be really emotional in contrast to that
