Even though I just liked-not-loved it I hope he just keeps making movies like "Eighth Grade" as opposed to specials bc I think he gets weighed down by his need to always grapple with the fact that he's at the center of them

I'm specifically talking about What and Make Happy.
If someone doesn't like those obviously they would dislike Inside
but it never occurred to me that that was possible

The point of WWIG (to me at least) is that "performative" does not neccesarily mean "insincere", a notion that imo is pretty integral to Burnham's whole approach as a performer
I'm a cranky luddite tbh but my interpretation was just the opposite, that performative is insincere and on the same level as goat cheese salad insofar as it's a means to get social attention

I really really like Disc 2. Specifically Welcome To The Internet -> All Eyes On Me, as someone straddling the line between Gen Z and Millennial who accidentally got raised by the internet. The placation, the doomscrolling, the distraction, the anxiety of living in a hyperconnected world really comes through in those tunes. seven outta ten

OK thanks. Makes sense you don't like this then.
My advise is to spend more time with things you like.

What are your favorite comedy specials?

iunno, tim minchin?? vaguely? i don't watch comedy specials or stand-up all that often because that's just not my thing. i checked out bo burnham out of a pop-cultural obligation more than anything, just to see if he really was as funny as my friends said he was. barring a few clever tracks here n there, he just didn't do it for me dawg. it's not because he "fails in comparison to other, more refined elite comedians hmph harumph" it's just because i wasn't all that impressed

>because that's just not my thing
Ok, then this is indeed an uphill battle.
Are there any pop-culture obligations you have enjoyed?

what a genuinely annoying series of questions you seem so fixated on asking lmfao. "oh, so you didn't enjoy this, hm. do you enjoy ANYTHING???? you fuckin NIHILIST???"

Just curious what you like. I thought it was an innocent question.

a cursory glance at my album ratings should tell you what i enjoy. but phrasing your question like "are there any pop-culture obligations you've enjoyed?" - especially after a presumptuous statement like "spend more time with the things you like" as if you know me well enough to say that I apparently don't? - sounds snarky and interrogatory, as if my low opinion of this piece of internet culture inherently equals a distaste for pop culture in general all because i don't worship at the altar of the arbiter of culture himself, bo burnham.
even if you didn't mean it like that, that's not how it wound up sounding. i suppose therein lies the problem with the neutrality of text on the internet. i guess you could say welcome to the internet hyuck hyuck hyuck

Eg, I can't help comparing this to some musical acts, like Future of the Left or Randy Newman, and like this just doesn't seem on the same level
