Yeah I've heard about this happening, definitely one of the biggest problems facing us as we bravely march further into the 2020s

Strangers is easily better, as Doof said it’s like a 8 song album, maybe even 10 imo. No one is more willing to love a new summery psych-pop Modest Mouse record than me, but I only get that vibe from like half of this.

Most of the album is mainly inoffensive and passable, but Acid Trip, Transmitting Receiving, and Spider on the Fly are three of the bands worst.

I see a lot of criticism of Leave a Light On, but I thought it was actually one of the better tracks.

I was so ready for Transmitting Receiving to be some buck-wild MK ultra manifesto but it's just nothing! It's literally a context-free list of random things, there's no substance at allllllll

yikes

not sure when i'll get a chance to hear this, but i do not agree with the generalisations this rev makes about the shape of the band's post-moon career + the assessment of this alb's palette is equally applicable to WWD in both specific details and corresponding affects, so that tinfoil hat is going ON

we're all still acting like We Were Dead isn't this band's clear best post-Moon then? ok

Good News all the way. But it’s been a steady decline since their peak of TM&A.

No one's First is absolutely a contender if we're just talking overall releases

Good News would go down a whole lot smoother if you cut the dollar store Tom Waits ripoffs + Dance Hall, and added History Sticks + I've Got It All

Steady decline since TLCW, but that's like that actual best indie rock album ever so

Yeah, Good News is a couple of good early singles, a strong closing pair, and a load of flam

TM&A holds up okay in the scheme of bloated Very Profound 00s indie opuses but it ain't the peak of anything

And yeah lol TLCW is the only correct answer for best MM. What a fking album

No one's first is incredible yeah, tbh if you count overall releases the decline is a lot less steady because Night on the sun came out after tm&a (I think) and no one's first came out after WWD

"and added History Sticks + I've Got It All"

I believe that depending on your vinyl pressing the latter is included in the tracklist, similar to Baby Blue Sedan being on the LCW vinyl

Baby Blue Sedan should always have been on LCW instead of fucking Long Distance Drunk so that's good news. someone out there is tryina sneak better songs on MM albums. now we just need Whale Song on WWD and we're set

got excited to see all this slander since the same happened with Strangers and I ended up digging most of that one

not the same case this time around. a lot of this plods. whole middle arc of the album needs some quality control

I have yet to hear anyone make a compelling argument that the band has truly evolved since Good News.

I don't care if people agree or disagree with the 4 but I don't think I said anything that isn't true about their last 3 albums

Good News was an excellent mainstream breakthrough, WWD rode its coattails (with some very strong songs tho), and StO was further diminishing returns on the same formula down to Lampshades literally cloning Float On

This one is gonna be divisive, clearly, but it's easily their biggest risk since their early discog aka back when they actually gave a shit. It's refreshing to hear them bring some creative juice again.
