Yeah that's emerged as one of my least favorites here

The album honestly starts out pretty well, I mostly enjoy tracks 1-5 even if most of those are nothing amazing, and it ends decently as well with the last two tracks, it’s tracks 6-10 that I really can’t get behind.
On the whole the only real keepers for me are “We’re Lucky”, “Wooden Soldiers”, and “Back to the Middle” (the latter of which has grown off me a bit since the first spin, while the other two have grown on me). “Fuck Your Acid Trip” I kind of like (TFA tone also does the very sudden verse-chorus transition thing though). “We Are Between” is a good pop rock single, even if Isaac’s lyrics aren’t very interesting. Competent, listenable, nothing super special though.

acid trip, we're lucky, wooden soldiers and the last two tracks would make a decent little 5-song EP

I kind of really hate "never fuck a spider on the fly", the title has the cadence of cleverness but in the context of the song it's completely vapid gibberish. Sorry to be *that guy* but the MM of 20 years ago would have laughed a song like that out of the room

I still think the biggest issue with this is the mixing. Too much going on all the time. Outside of that, this is one of their better albums actually.

Been re-listening to most of the discog this last week…this is their weakest
I agree with the comments above that tracks 6-10 do the most damage but there isn’t a truly great MM track here and that’s worse news in a way

Yeah, there's nothing on here that entices me to re-listen. Strangers at least had The Ground Walks, but this doesn't even have one track that I think would be among their top 25 best songs. It's not terrible, it's just meh.

best i can do for a great track is wooden soldiers but it takes until the end to really win me over. song is nothing on the ground walks either way

I'm frankly a bit stunned this has a 3+ average, it's the most textbook "late-career slump" album I've heard in years. Trying to spruce up their sound with bleep bloops n shit but they just sound spent

yea spot on description. good on ppl for digging this ig as its not like i wanted to hate it but the songwriting sounds so uninspired and the electronics are done really cheaply and lazily to me

i don't think they sound spent at all. modest mouse definitely have some cool-sounding songs but i don't think they were ever all-time great songwriters. structures always seemed pretty standard to me.

they def had interesting song structures in the old day w the dynamic shifts in songs like beach side property and teeth like gods shoeshine, but even when it wasn't their melody game was more than strong enough to make up for it, which is j not really here for me

Catch them live if you want to hear them sound spent.

i think walking and running is my least favorite. chorus doesn’t register as words to me? what are the words there? still better than marr’s vox on wwd, love his chops on the six string but his voice didn’t work for me
also this take sucks imo lazy zzzz

Where did Marr do vocals on WWD? Or are you referring to James Mercer?
