Listening to this at 7am feels appropriate

Yeah I mean I get that this isn't The Moon & Antarctica or The Lonesome Crowded West, but it's a really fun album that I can already feel sort of becoming my summer jam. A few clunkers just like with most Modest Mouse albums but roughly 8/12 songs here are super enjoyable.

Just saw that comment on other page. Ive never had to have a modest moust album have to grow on me before. This is very different from other mm albums

Might be a strange comparison but the reception to this reminds me of The Shins' Heartworms. Latter day album that many dismissed before it was even released, it ended up being tons of fun (albeit not very groundbreaking), and had a very average / subpar rating on Sputnik. That might be my favorite Shins album and although this will never top MM's earlier records, it might end up being my most listened to (?). Time will tell!

I'm with you Sowing and good pull-in from frequent MM collaborator James Mercer. I am a little bummed that Sputnik just defaulted to thinking this would suck. Mind you, I like all Mouse but can still tell a Strangers to Ourselves from a Moon & Antarctica, but there's a lot of cool stuff here. It's not a revolutionary statement by any means, but MM is playing with some new sounds here and there's a certain melodic sadness running beneath the whole album that comes out more and more with repeated listens. I mean, it's Isaac Brock, so there's always going to be something entertaining going on, even at his most pedestrian. I agree with your assessment about this being a very nice summer bop too. We'll enjoy together, friend!

Still haven't gotten around to listening to this, but I approve of the praise for Heartworms. Album gets too much hate, it's quite great (although it doesn't touch Chutes Too Narrow in my view).

Love the discourse that people disliking this came into it with an agenda or only dig early MM and checked out after M&A
Quality straw-mannin'

Lol true story, porcupinetheater - I knew I was doing it and did it anyway. I'm just pushing the Mousessaince agenda. Digging it myself and pointing fingers elsewhere.

I would love to love this. Really would.

I'm also turning into a poppified old man a bit at almost 32 only vaguely carrying my old opaque musical tendencies, so it makes sense that I'm vibing with another semi-glossy catchy MM record.

Lmao fair play

I'll be long dead and buried in my golden casket before I go through an Ebenezer-scrooge-type revelation with this album I think.
