Think this is my least favorite of his so far but it's definitely not bad by any means.

And entire review about Refn and synthwave and not one mention of Drive or its soundtrack...

eh Perturbator and Carpenter Brut are bigger than Drive's ost nowadays I'd say

Even Hotline Miami's soundtrack as a whole is

Maybe, but Drive's soundtrack pre-dates them and was arguably one of the biggest reasons for the popularization of synthwave over the past decade. That makes Refn arguably as important to synthwave as Perturbator. It's not really important to the review, but I just thought it's funny that the reviewer didn't make the connection despite writing an entire thesis connecting Refn's movies and Perturbator's music.

Everyone watched Drive and its soundtrack is the definition of overhyped. Real Human Bean is a maymay, Under Your Spell is new wave-cum-dreampop, and Nightcall is just mediocrity that seems way better than it is because Refn is so good at incorporating music into his directing (see: elevating a boring beat drop with a well-timed light switch). No one even remembers the one actually really good track in the movie because it was utilized so well. Meanwhile everyone who owns an Aphex Twin album or played Hotline Miami 2 could have picked a better soundtrack, even if limited only to pre-2011 music.

And I did mention Drive, I made it the centerpoint of the review's thesis, but you must have missed that somehow.
