does lend itself to background listening...but I bet if these songs were to pop up in isolation on shuffle they'd sound distinctive enough and would register as really good

maybe this hits a tonal/instrumental sweet spot....because I'm struggling to rate any of their previous albums above a 3 and I've revisited each twice now, will see if that changes

I don't think this does anything to reach out to grab you. It is just a lush album that depending on your taste and mood you'll want to sink into. I could see someone thinking of this as background music but in the same token it's perfectly capable of hitting you right in the feels given the right setting. Most background music doesn't have that ability.

butt.

Twenty Long Years could almost be a Menzingers song, especially the first minute or so. The singer even sounds a lot like Greg in that song. Sowing did you ever listen to Hello Exile or From Exile?

I love this album, but I gotta say the 4 second interlude gave me a little giggle. I don't think I've ever seen a track that short

"only heard it once. it's definitely respectable but nothing rly stood out to me as anything more than nice-sounding, polished production and what not"

listen again Gyro. I thought the same thing on first listen and now I'm hooked

"leaning into that self-deprecating angle hard in that first sentence"

It's good to poke fun at yourself every once in a while. There's much truth in jest though, and while I (humbly) believe I'm a good writer, I don't know that I'm always the most objective critic. I let my heart and emotions sway me to hyperbolic extremes, often aglow with the sort of optimism that comes from joyous events like weddings, child birth, etc which I've been so fortunate enough to experience in recent years.

"I mean this latest one doesn't sound miles away from the Honey Harper debut"

I got these vibes as well.

"Sowing did you ever listen to Hello Exile or From Exile?"

I did, but I'd have to go back and listen again to pick up on any parallels. The Menzingers are 3.5-core for me; not a dedicated follower but I do enjoy their works.

"disagree on this not doing much to reach out and grab you though"

I guess what I mean is that this is concave not convex...if that makes any sense whatsoever. I'd think of convex music as jagged/jarring/abrasive or over-the-top thematically/production-wise/melodically, and concave as music that subtly draws you in but doesn't make an epic bid. I'm not saying it has nothing to latch onto, I'm saying it invites you to enter its lush garden rather than grabbing your neck and screaming "look at me".

I like depressive folk. Is this that?

No, this felt happier to me. I got Beatles/Elvis vibes at times

you forgot to mention Covid 19 in this one :-/

Great review as always. Listened to this in the background this morning while busy at work and it was light, sunny and enjoyable. I can understand why you mentioned Ruston Kelly being on constant rotation and then jumping into this review. I am excited for more listens and think this will be a great relaxing summer listen.

"I've never heard something like this before in recent times; it mixes modern and vintage to the point where it feels timeless..." [3]

Yeah I think this actually does deserve a 5. It just feels like it's going to be relevant no matter how old I get; sound like it came from decades ago but polished like it's new.
