The drums have always been programmed, but they work in the mix imo. TBF this is essentially one-man bedroom black metal and in my opinion he's doing a great job at it. The production is dense, but you can hear everything in the mix, and it all sounds nicely balanced. Whether that density is intentional or not, I think it fits really well atmospherically with the space theme.

Yeah never had a problem with programmed drums, if they get the job done. Being a rabid Limbonic Art fan for years does that.

Agreed dude, honestly in 2021 it's become such a norm and stuff like Superior Drummer and Steven Slate drums actually sound really decent, but the reality is they are here to stay. Half the guitars you hear are reamped after the fact or just recorded with amp sims. Most bass is DI with a Sansamp plugin or Neural DSP Darkglass, so like, just enjoy the music if it sounds good, it's a losing battle against digital instruments.

Agreed, there's definitely a different technique and talent need to program digital instruments so that they don't sound stiff and, well, overly mechanical. So there's still plenty of instances where programmed drums and the like just hit me wrong. But I think as it becomes more and more prevalent, and both the artists and the listeners get more accustomed to it, after a while you won't even notice/it won't matter.

I agree dude, sometimes I hear programmed drums and am like, nope try again, there's definitely a skill involved in making them sound good, or even just fit the mix.

to me the drums sound fairly organic here. I usually (though I am by no means some sort of expert) pick up on overly mechanical drums and this album feels pretty natural

personally i think the drums sound overly mechanical here but it's fine, it fits with the space theme and you have to cut the dude slack since he's doing it all himself. not a significant flaw with the music.

there's a lot better one man outfits out there though, like afsky and panopticon.

Yeah you're probably right, it does grow. But I have made a pact to stay on 3.5 and I'm not sure I can change that.
