So this is the power of a porc 5...
I thought your default method of communication involved facetiousness in buckets?
Great review, keep doing you hunnybuns. I like xiu xiu's production, so here's hoping for clean mayhem

they're still finding exciting ways to tinker with their core sound, such a strong album

if this aligns with their career arc i'm expecting a solid 3/5 but will remain hopeful. nice writeup. I'd personally consider chopping the first and last paragraphs but that depends if they are artifacts of direct inspiration in-the-moment you scribbled down (maybe a plus) or if they were contrived (less of a plus) ((so, your call)). the closing bit of your second-to-last paragraph is strong enough to close the review imo

First was definitely in the moment, last is there to bring a close to the ideas in the first, but they’re basically floating thought islands that have no business being attached to a review.
Left ‘em in because that sort of feels-right-put-it-in-for-its-own-sake felt kinda Xiu

“I thought your default method of communication involved facetiousness in buckets?”
That’s all those accumulated defense mechanisms, Baby, keeping myself at a cozy arm’s length! But now Xiu Xiu come in and RUINED it, gonna have to share with people I love and work on myself ugh

this is a hell of a review man, never heard Xiu Xiu but gotta listen now

will read review later, but if it's a porc 5 i've no doubt it's stellar
haven't heard these guys. seen them compared to throwing a set of kitchenware down a flight of stairs

The absolute best kitchenware sounds aye. Just add some ludicrous levels of self indulgence and a whiny vocalist and you have a successful formula.
For any newcomers, check Knife Play... seriously (it’s actually excellent).

Most people just stopped at learning to play the spoons, Xiu Xiu got fucking visionary with it and turned the whole junk drawer inside out m///
Couldn't see any other vocalist working as well within the sound as Jamie - strange, passionate, and desperate in the input, strange passionate & desperate in the output. Check Knife Play ∞

This feels like it's going to be one of those albums where a handful of mindblowingly cool moments make me want to love it, but I can't remember anything about it hours later. We'll see though, this is promising at the very least.

Great review porc, might have to check this despite my mixed impressions of their back catalogue

Listening to this just made me want to go back and check Angel Guts again.
Early days but I’m gonna have to adjust my expectations. I like that this retains the darker vibe from some of Xiu Xiu’s more compelling releases, yet the noisy unpredictability is somewhat absent. I wonder if they had to hone in the more outlandish tendencies to try and fit in with all these guests (and still make it a cohesive album). TBC.

I think the guests slot in really nicely with the sounds they were working with throughout the 2010s. It all feels like a vert natural fit, I don't get the impression XX are watering themselves down for the sake of their guests.

I like the Chelsea Wolfe collab more than (what I’ve heard of) her solo stuff, so that’s something to work with.
I’m not dismissing it entirely, just trying to separate it from some of their past material. These guys are still a bit hit or miss (generally) for me. To be fair they have a large and varied discog, some of which I haven’t even touched.
