This was solid on first listen, but a bit of a step down from Every Country’s Sun which I thought was their best in a while. Hope it grows on me.
I want a whole album in the style of Teenage Exorcists/Party in the Dark/We’re Not Done

the guitarwork on "Ceiling Granny" oddly reminds me of Hum and the like.

If you like these guys, see them live (when concerts are a thing again). They are extremely tight, their sound is utterly crisp, and the mix is superb. One of my favorites

Well, it's okay. Hardcore Will Never Die... remains the last record the really grabbed me. But still a solid relaxing listen.
And props for the rev!

I listened to this twice and...I'll need to listen to it again as not too much made an impression.
The granny song maybe.

Saw them at a festival here in Romania a couple of years ago and they sounded really good. I was so happy they played Auto Rock and Every Country's Sun.

Their best album in a decade for sure.

There was a bonus track on hardcore will never die that's like 20 mins long and far better than the main album. Otherwise I didn't rly check out their output from last decade

haven't listened to a Mogwai since The Hawk is Howling... might give this a whirl

"Is there at least a hightlight track or two? There usually is with Mogwai"
yes definitely. the first 7 tracks are p much a total waste of time; very much the sound of an OST band going through the motions of making boring rock music. "Drive the Nail" is a toothless ver of Unwound's Abstraktions (which in turn was an audible ver of Slint's For Dinner, all roads lead to Rome...) and "Ceiling Granny" could have been really fun if it switched gears a little.
however, the final four tracks would have been a solid EP. "Midnight Flit" is easily the best song here, and the only moment where it feels like they're using their soundtrack toolkit for something invigorating; "Pat Stains" and the closer are solid Mogwai climaxcores as you've heard them before, and "Supposedly..." might have been the album highlight if it had focused on its awesome bridge climax and less on its derivative videogame bassline.
v glad i checked this, even if half of it is v much to the bin. nice rev, insomniac - not sure I follow on where this one's "pop sensibilities" are, but otherwise largely agreed with it

yeah, i see what you mean. midnight flit is a dramatic bump up in quality from everything that came before it. the closer is really solid too.

"Still gotta listen to this, feeling a hard 3 incoming"
Me with a large chunk of mogwai's discog at this point

Had a few unfocussed listens and thought it was a solid 3.5, had another more focussed listen today and actually enjoyed it quite a lot. Not decided yet, I want to sit down and properly listen to it without anything on my mind, but I feel like I prefer it to Every Country's Sun.
