haha that's so odd, i was actually contemplating asking you what you use to make music. i've been toying around with Reason5 and I just can't come close to making something this crisp and cohesive (i don't use any peripherals, just what's including within reason, minus some field recordings i've tried to implement)

I created all of these songs in Ableton Live, but I see no reason (ha!) why Reason wouldn't work just as well. most DAWs these days all have pretty solid stock plugins and instruments and support third party VSTs. for this album I used a healthy dose of samples (especially for drums) and synthesis (some stock in ableton and some third party synths too). I would recommend to look for tutorials about how to use what I consider the 5 most important effects: compression (multiband, limiters & glue included), EQ, saturation (distortion & decimators included), reverb & delay. also would recommend learning how to manipulate samples in terms of pitch, stretching and various algorithms. basic synthesis is also highly recommended to be aware of (knowning ADSR, envelopes and LFO is crucial!).

if you want specific advice feel free to pm me man! I'm more than happy to share what I know and some tips and tricks that I've picked up over the years. honestly, the bottom line is that if you think it sounds good, it probably does. however there are some common pitfalls that you can avoid, such as too much reverb (and too much DIFFERENT reverb) can easily make a track muddy so it loses punch. so diverting a common reverb to a send channel (reverb set to 100% wet to avoid original signals being fed into it) and EQing the reverb on the send removing low frequencies can avoid such muddiness for example. you can also use compression to duck the reverb when the original sound is being played such that the reverb only plays after the dry signal. I might be going off a bit here, but as I said, if you want tips and tricks I'm more than happy to help out ^^

my problem is always making beats - what do you use to make them so punchy and expansive/wht do you use for them?
