i still enjoy more metal than him though ;o

"i definitely love the upside of enjoying things i never would have before" - this absolutely rings true. I remember there used to be a time where I couldn't stand skramz or 2nd wave bm shit and was absolutely nutting myself over squeaky-clean prog metal. Now most skramz/bm stuff passes through to 'this is fine' after a few years of falling over backwards for it, but there's new exciting stuff that I didn't enjoy prior.
I do wonder whether in a few years time you'll start to be able to enjoy the stuff that you used to enjoy again, having spent some time away from the tropes and predictableness of it all. You know, liking it for the reasons you used to like it. We'll see I guess.

@park yeah that's basically the user set I'm referring to, considering a few of them crossover into my own current taste. maybe yourself as well? (I spy 11% electronic)
i like GhandiLion too

>maybe yourself as well? (I spy 11% electronic)
my charts will change drastically eventually tm
i dont have anywhere near as much electronic rated as i actually enjoy btw

idk for example i still love death, morbid angel, gorguts, demilich, atheist, bands i consider to have actual interesting songwriting in dm but i cant stand listening to vader or stuff like that anymore

there's a little somethin somethin for me in virtually every genre, the more you explore the more you realize that hating on entire umbrellas usually just means you aren't as knowledgeable about them as you think
that being said i still love to pretend to hate guitar music for the meme

>the more you explore the more you realize that hating on entire umbrellas usually just means you aren't as knowledgeable about them as you think
agreed in 99% of cases. wasnt even hating, just for most of my life i never would have understood the point of noise music for example

also i should note i actually envy people who can enjoy super derivative music i dont look down on them unless they post dumb things like tundra does
i think its good to enjoy as many things as you can as much as you can

like i think it would be pretty stupid to want to not enjoy something

"hating on entire umbrellas usually just means you aren't as knowledgeable about them as you think"
this has definitely been a humbling lesson I've kinda gradually come to learn. it started with hearing chaotic or extreme music and thinking it was total garbage to eventually coming to enjoy or even love it. I go into that with my hip-hop rec list as well. at least it means I'm maturing
doesn't mean I'll even think djent isn't garbage tho

this. I see it with the users who can find like 10 records during the year that they slap a 5 on and say "man I've been spinning this for a week". gone from 'get a load of this guy' to 'man I wish I was like that'

You gotta go into new genres with a different mindset. What makes prog click definitely won't make hip-hop click, but often people go into new genres looking for that same or similar experience. Once you discover what makes that particular genre unique and excellent at, it all starts to make sense. And then you can switch mindsets instantly after.
Hard agree with pots though, I reckon every genre has something great to offer if I looked hard enough

>I reckon every genre has something great to offer if I looked hard enough
what about the ones manufactured for commercialism like post-grunge
|
| |
every genre has something great to offer...
I kind of grew up with post-grunge in the background so it doesnt bother me so much, I just wish each band wasn't the fucking same.
Am really struggling with kpop though. It's just too manufactured and I dont even find it fun like normal pop. It's kinda the uncanny valley of music for me

"doesn't mean I'll even think djent isn't garbage tho"
haha yes but this is very specific. take a step back to progressive metal and a step back even further to just metal in general and there is more and more to explore and find something to enjoy in.
