Big yes
I mean the entire "song machine" premise kind of solidifies that they've given up on conceptual cohesion or sonic consistency entirely in favor of just compiling a bunch of tracks built as singles

There are some bad songs for sure but I count at least 8 pretty great songs.
If I made my own Gorillaz mixtape consisting like 15-20 songs hand picked from their entire discog it would be one of my favourite albums of all time probably. Plastic beach is the only rly sonically cohesive album of theirs imo. They've always had that issue of being a singles band

This line from the other review "Of course, this is still Damon Albarn, who can’t make a consistently strong album to save his life, and Song Machine is not exempt from the requisite failed experiments and bland filler." is so true.
Whether it's Blur or Gorillaz, I can't say any one album by Albarn is amazing or anything; they all have at least 2 or 3 songs that're mediocre at best, sometimes bad. With that in mind, this is one of his best, and agreed that a playlist of hand picked best Gorillaz songs would be an amazing album.

"Best songs on this are leaaaaagues better than anything on either humanz or now now imo
Could not disagree more about consistency. Album ranges from 1/5 songs to 5/5 songs lmao. But it is better than the last two for sure"
I don't see how you figure. Songs like humility, souk eye, strobelite, saturnz barz, the apprentice, busted and blue, all crush anything on this album. Where are the 5/5 songs here? They don't exist

Aries obliterates all of those, especially busted and blue which is a broke ass track
Not to mention the half dozen other tracks I prefer over any of those
Subjectivity a bitch I know

Humility would be one of the worst tracks on an actually good album, it just has the illusion of being really good because it's memorable unlike most of The Now Now
Same goes for Busted and Blue tbh

I like pagans but 4 minutes is about as long as I can tolerate anything involving Beck

This is fun stuff. I wish they still operated at a bit more of a distance lyrically though. Their music loses a fair bit of appeal when features are rapping literally/directly. Feels less like a Gorillaz feature and more like a bunch of loosies sellotaped on top of instrumentals
