It’s just a way of differentiating between that original DM sound and other more ‘progressive/modern’ forms of death metal developed since. I guess.

Perhaps it is a little overused as a descriptor and is fairly broad in itself these days.

Just something to help define the style, no big deal. When I read it, I know I'm going to hear something that probably doesn't resemble Rings of Saturn.

Yeah I mean it isn’t very specific, but I can be certain it won’t sound like *insert band* etc. It absolutely rules a few things out.

...but then that’s not an issue isolated to ‘OSDM’ as most vague genre tags are just that, vague. ‘Post-hardcore‘ or ‘post-rock’ means very little by itself, it’s just a starting point. OSDM is arguably better at narrowing it down than either of those labels.

> Honest question: is it even accurate to call OSDM "old school"? Like did that style of death metal ever go away at all?

it kind of did yeah, especially in the late 90s/early-mid 2000s

Is this another osdm band that everyone says is good but is the same derivative bs that basically every 90s OSDM demo was?

Not really. It includes some modern tropes. OSDM at it’s core, yet there’s certainly enough variety to keep things interesting.

It doesn’t reinvent the genre, but expecting it to would be your first mistake.

Cool might check, I like osdm but fuck me does a lot of the old stuff sound the same and sound derivative as fuck.

I couldn't agree more. You have to look hard to find bands that stand out.

Yeah I'm liking it more this time around, though it's a bit too straightforward. I wish more bands were like !t.o.o.h!, ad nauseaum and such.

This was pretty disappointing. I thought it might eventually click, but it still hasn’t and the song with BDM guest vocals is shit.

i don't really see how this wouldn't click if you liked sentient autolysis and the 2019 demo tbh

Feels weaker, tinnier. Not sure if it's a production thing or what. It sounds less like dm and more like mxc.

Elite dm album from past couple years. Dont get much better than this as far as newer dm records. Great stuff
