Take Me Out Of Town is one of the more forgettable tracks on here for me, but I woke up this morning with it stuck in my head

That’s one of my favorites here tbh even if (or maybe because) it’s the most standardly National-esque.

Good review sunny, unfortunately this didn’t do much for me.

album art's dull pastel look was foreshadowing all along.

Distant Axis is literally "The Crane Wife 3" by the Decemberists [3]
With that said, it is not as good as Crane Wife. The chord progression is really common (see The Mountain Goats 'Going to Georgia' for another reference. The weird thing is that Axis and Crane have almost identical strumming and tempo as well, not to mention some lyrical themes.
All in all though, this is a solid release! Don't see myself revisiting much but itll be nice for the next couple weeks.

Great review. Solid record, if a bit monotonous and flat. It reminds me of The Boatman's Call by Nick Cave. Distant Axis is good, but the similarity with The Crane Wife is pretty shameless. Favs are My Eyes Are T-Shirts, Take Me Out of Town, and the t/t.
If I were to rank all National albums and related projects since HV, it'd go HV>SWB>TWFM>Planetarium=El Vy>AMEtF>this>Folklore

This sounds like Berninger re-visiting the National's long forgotten debut album lmoa.

Absolutely love the production and playing on this, really manages to be intoxicating and warm/inviting without slipping into boring imo

I agree. I sort of wish this was the next National album instead of I Am Easy to Find

Yeah, I agree - going forward keep the Devendorfs and allow the twins to do soundtrack work etc

I think this album and the twins' production work lately poses an interesting question as to the direction of the next National album. Radiohead managed to bring each member's interests and sounds together for AMSP after years of solo projects and soundtrack work, I wouldn't be surprised if The National could do it too.

Tuna, if 'I Am Easy to Find' was the teaser to this new era of the band's work I'm not expecting much
