Honestly I’m surprised these guys (this guy) haven’t blown up in the Sput-sphere yet. He has been remarkably consistent in quality while still providing continually fresh takes on black metal. Contends with mgła as my favorite contemporary black metal artist.

honestly I think BM is just one facet of the project...I feel like it has an hardcore foundation, painted in prog metal and BM (and for that alone, very experimental).

As opposed to mgła - which is a straight fw BM act...

edit: mind this take/view is considering previous works

Hard agree Triple D. That's what I was trying to get at in my review - Serpent Column is far more than "just" black metal. But the way he integrates those influences - prog, math, core, death, etc. - into the black metal base is so sleek and streamlined that none of those subsidiaries truly outshine the "black"ness.

Which means, if I were forced to classify this with a single metal tag, I'd *have* to call it black metal. At the same time, though, that would be totally underselling everything it has to offer.

But I do concur - going into this with an appetite for straight-up black metal might be a risk approach. Need to have an open mind. But for what it's worth, I'm not typically a fan of mathcore but the integration here is splendid, accentuating the BM portions without distracting from them.

Hell yes man. One of the best metal acts currently in the bizz imo. Insanely consistent.
