Starlight was the beginning of the end for me, I liked the album as a whole but man that wasn’t what I wanted. It was ok at first but got progressively worse over time. Never anticipated an album more though so maybe that didn’t help.

Black Holes is my favorite Muse album, but yeah the production is fuckin terrible. Like Absolution, everything just feels so compressed and flat, and so much gets lost in the wall of noise, there's no detail or dynamics... loudness war casualties.

I thought everything Muse did from Showbiz to The Resistance were very high quality at the very least. Nothing felt forced and there was some honesty behind it. Even if they weren't the best songs (Guiding Light) it still seemed as though it was heartfelt. Since the 2nd Law, a lot of their material sounds manufactured and void of creativity. It's almost as if they attempt to try as many different genres just for the sake of it.

Biggest problem with Muse & specifically Bellamy is/was the lack of subtlety, it’s all ridiculous bombast & over-the-top ‘apocalyptic’ shenanigans, it worked for a while but the formula was tiresome after a while. Knights is one of the most absurd songs ever released, almost admirable in how little restraint was evident, yet that doesn’t make it good.
Invincible is a Bowie tribute song, Starlight is a by-the-numbers piano-led anthem that could’ve been written by Keane or Coldplay (not a good thing) & a lot of the decent songs (Assassins/Exo-Politics etc. were the victim of poor production).
I actually like Black Holes but due to nostalgia but it’s no more than a 3.5/5 (at best).

Knights is a fantastic song, foh.

Invincible is a Bowie tribute? Well I've only listened to Ziggy Stardust but it doesn't sound that much like Bowie too me.

Exo-Politics is phenomenal, as is Assassin

The funny thing is I’d have agreed with you guys & argued against my points 10+ years ago, now everything has been given a different perspective. They’re still a good band but post-Absolution they did start to decline, the signs were there & their masterpieces (such as this) lost their lustre to an extent.

Could never get into this album, well could never get into this band really. I like Absolution well enough though

New Born spends so much time building up to that chugging riff, and when it drops it's just... meh. Take away the distortion and it probably sounds like Chopsticks.
Also, Invincible a Bowie tribute? More like Jeff Buckley

The solo tho

Haha I always liked Invincible, despite how corny it is. And yeah the solo is one of the highlights on that album.
