I am definitely on a different wavelength to you - Gilgamesh is my least favorite song on The Ascension. This album is transformative and will be considered close to his best by many as time goes on.

Eclipsed by Deftones? Deftones released their best album since White Pony. Stevens released a half-assed boring album that is his worst album aside from Eat Your Rabbit, ruining the gold streak he had in the process. This album isn't getting attention because it is shit and it shouldn't get attention for that reason alone.

Great review although I am not hearing instrumental variety. AoA has that but not this. Some songs sound indistinguishable to me, just Sufjan messing around with the same sounds and samples.

with specific samples and such yeah I think there is plenty but again the composition itself isn’t strong (imo) which lends to what you said

I’m sorry for just such a terrible score and the only 1 here, but y’all, I couldn’t even make it past “Landslide.” This is some of the worst music I’ve ever heard.

Making songs like “Ursa Major” and “Die Happy” should be a crime.

“Ursa Major” is probably next to Arcade Fire’s “Chemistry” as the worst song of all time.

All of it is just unbelievably sloppy and messy and next to unlistenable. I really don’t get how this can garner any positive feedback. To each his own, I guess, but man does this feel completely unfinished and a lot of the samples and electronics are extremely grating on the ears, Ursa Major, especially.

Boring, each song majorly overstaying its welcome, awkward vocals that don’t fit the overall vibe of the album. I can’t really touch on the lyrics because I haven’t listened to any song enough to know. And I really don’t plan to ever return to this. Absolute dogshit.

imo 1s don’t need to be justified. all music starts at 0 (or a 1 via sput’s rating system) and builds up. if it fails to ascend, then a 1 it is

I feel I rate way too highly. So if I give something a 1 or 1.5, it is extremely nightmarish and it makes me sick to think of listening to again lol

Giving this a 1 is basically like saying this is in league with Soulja Boy and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.

Great review Johnny. This was a disappointment after how fantastic C&L, the live version of it, the bonus songs on The Greatest Gift, Planetarium, and the CMBYN songs all were. Age of Adz wasn't totally my thing, but it's still a solid album, and this comes across as a more messy and boring version of it.

Run Away With Me and the t/t are the only songs I remember really liking, no desire to listen to the rest again tbh, tho I'll give it a couple more spins to see if anything grows on me. My Rajneesh is definitely the best, and it's not even on the album : /

If anything I was going into it with good expectations honestly. I’ve liked his prior work and have rated it well. Then the singles came out and muddled my expectations, as the only one I liked was not even included. America is too long. It’s pretty but the length was far from needed. Sugar was boring. And Video Game was silly. But honestly if the deep cuts followed those, I could see myself giving it an inoffensive 2.5 or so. But the deep cuts here just murder this thing to oblivion.

I feel like if this weren’t Sufjan, most folks wouldn’t give this a second thought, but that’s just me.

@colt - I didn’t mean it like that lol. I just think you should rate based on enjoyment, with a 1 being “I didn’t enjoy this at all” and building from there

also I’ll defend soulja boy itt if need be
