Still never bothered to check this but thought you’d be all over the collab Sowing. Has a different vibe than C&L to me even if it’s also folky.

You're a horribly shallow take

No seriously though it clearly borrows the C&L aesthetic anyone can see that

I'm not saying it isn't beautiful I'm just saying it's not very interesting

Saying it's better than C&L is kind of like saying the Monkees were better than the Beatles

It's melodically different because the new melodies suck

Lol don't mind me I think I'm just getting tired of Sufjan's post C&L stuff being unmemorable aesthetic-over-craft finesse.

His ambient stuff was the worst offender, whereas I actually sort of enjoyed the new collab. I think The Ascension stuck out to me in a good way because it was a return to his grandiose stuff with all the over the top melodies.

The more I listen to Sufjan the more I'm convinced I don't actually like his style of music I just love Carrie & Lowell.

New Sufjan record is effortless.

As in, he ain't put much effort in it and it still pretty good.

Back to Oz is a bop.

Seven Swans, Illinois, and Carrie and Lowell are his only "essential" albums. Michigan is overrated af and Age of Adz has some amazing songs but also some big missteps

"Sowing I'm confused at how you find his music to be aesthetic over craft and don't like his style of music much in general yet specifically like this because of the over the top melodies"

Some of his music is, some isn't. For example, the new collab is all breathy whispered singing (just like C&L), but I feel like there is zero presence of any sort of interesting musical direction. It's just meandering sighs and that's pretty but also very ephemeral. C&L has aesthetic overlap but also has gripping melodies and emotional delivery that is impossible to shake. I specifically like this one (The Ascension) because it does what so many of his other recent works (Convocations, Aporia, Planetarium) fail to, which really boils down to possessing melodies that stick beyond a single listen - which I credit to stronger songwriting, hence craft before aesthetic rather than just a cool wash of confessional whispers that require maximal effort to engage with. Just my opinion obviously, I know some people dislike C&L and maybe find his newest collab with De Augustine more memorable; I just for the life of me can't fathom getting more out of that breezy record than an all-time great entry into the American folk canon.

America is an absolute epic you heathen ;-)

Makes sense Colton; to each his own. I listened to A Beginner's Mind twice and just couldn't see the appeal in it besides vibes.
