There's something about "second halves" in this album, man. Genesis, Error, Urantia, Spell...
if this wasn't brutally compressed into satan's asshole (though at least I don't hear any ugly clipping like in SNW or WP) I'd have it already at a 4 probs.
"Koi No Yokan has its moments but there's also a ton of brickwalling on that album"
I know I spammed it in plenty of threads but
*inhales*
HDtracks (and other digital shops I imagine) version of KNY is a lot healthier than CD/stream. The other albums didn't get this luxury tho, so don't get too shopping happy.

yeah the HDtracks version of KNY is really dynamic. it's their best produced record (that specific version). the fact this is compressed to death really doesn't help it considering the synth layering etc.

My problem isn't even the production, but rather the fact that this is the most by-the-numbers album in the band's discog. Nothing ever really stands out to me, even compared to their other lower-ranking albums like Gore and Adrenaline. Every time I listen to this I'm like "yep, that's a Deftones record alright" and that's about it

Maybe it's because I didn't truly get into the band until Diamond Eyes (I'd heard White Pony long before and forgotten it), but my hope was always for them to make something like DE once more and this does that IMO.

I've been a Deftones fan since around the release of White Pony and I think KNY is their best album. After a misstep with Gore, I was hoping to fall in love with this album, but surprisingly I was disappointed by Terry Date's production and Chino's melodies. I don't think the rougher production does the band any favors and I'd strongly prefer they worked with Nick Raskulinecz again, who gives them a pristine, massive sound.
And finally, this may be an unpopular decision, but I think it's time for Chino to stop screaming. There's too many filters and effects going on. Maybe a word here or there for emphasis in the future, but I wouldn't want much more than that. Leave the aggression to the strings.

Imo Chino's scramz have always been bullshit but they definitely detract here more than most albums. Those Genesis verses are just painful
