"could you elaborate on this? Gore is kind of an oddball album i'd hardly call it safe"
Idk when I think "oddball Deftones album" I think White Pony, S/T, and SNW... three albums where they throw a ton of shit at the wall and made a vehement effort to make each track distinctly different.
Gore is not that at all imo. Outside of Acid Hologram and the Cantrell solos on Phantom Bride... there's nothing weird, unique, odd or anything about those songs. Even on a track by track basis quite a bit of the album bleeds together. It's Deftones at their most vanilla and lazy.
The band is much better when they write songs with a different style they go all in on, rather than make every song some metal/alt-rock/dream pop Frankenstein like on Gore.

so can you point me to other songs with non-deftony riffs like Xenos and Pittura, or the toolgaze(?) of (L)MIRL, or the final third of the t/t?

Ah, so Gore was indeed weird after all

Yeah (L)MIRL and Pittura are some of my fave 'tones tunes for the exact reason they don't sound like any of their other songs. Gore played more like a Palms record at points.

"but there's def more of a "post metal" influence here than any of their prior work, and Sergio and Frank have never had more of presence throughout an entire record as they do here" big 2 on this

There is zero post-metal on here

"There is zero post-metal on here"
If you say so Ben bro, we can't all change our views for you XD
The "post" term is debatable, comparing to the conventional post. For me tho, the way the electronics and atmosphere act, plus the fat chords and bass, gets the post tag from me.
Keep holding to Gore, cause it needs your (our) love too. Make sure you don t do that by making something fall.

I can see this growing even more on me. It's the closest thing I've heard to Extol's The Blueprint Dives, which is an absolute classic in my book.

I haven't checked that one but I know Extol and, unless that album is hugely different, its a damn weird take lol (or mine if that's true).
Anyway, check Azusa for postExtol m/

It's Extol's most special album. It sounds very different compared to their other stuff and it's actually my favorite. It sounds a lot like this one. Perhaps a bit less energic and more contemplative.

Yo wtf, I almost didn’t give it a listen when I saw the ‘black metal’ tag but I’m glad I still did. Listening now I dig it

They prog a little too hard imo, which overshadows the genre they try to achieve there. I mean on that album, because their proggy nature fits their other releases much more. I like all their albuns to a certain level, cause they always seem to me a little scholar nice guys music for my taste lol. The riffs and tightness are undeniable tho.
Undeceived is obviously their best for me.
