It's indeed a beaut but I think it's a little too smoothed out to the point that it borders on losing that classic FF earthy charm.

Crazy how much this one grew on me. One of my “go-to”s now, which puts Crack-Up in last place in my discography ranking which sounds criminal because I still think CU is a masterpiece.

This one is just so smooth and pretty. Robin’s melodies are always on point, and this time he found how to keep that strong point and also simplify the instrumentation without sacrificing any quality.

For me it's the exact opposite. I still think this is very pretty stuff, but it generally lacks the folky grit or whatever that makes CU and HB feel so authentic and worth returning to. (I realize this comment now looks silly with the 4.5 attached)

FF > this >>>>>>>>>>> the others

CU and HB aren't "folky" at all imo. I don't get that vibe at all. Always felt way more proggy, and very much to their detriment.

You're definitely right about the prog/avant-folk nature of CU and HB. If that's not your thing I could totally see preferring the debut and this, but I love their more adventerous and unpredictable side.

Every Fleet Foxes release is folky for sure haha

HB is their best but CU is underrated, love how weird and experimental they got while not sacrificing any of their beautiful sound.

My ranking is probably unpopular, but Crack-Up > Fleet Foxes > Helplessness Blues > Shore. All four rule though.

Loving the live rendition of this on A Very Lonely Solstice, also still amazed by Featherweight, it's angelic

I could see that ranking Sunny. CU is definitely #1.

CU > HB > Shore = FF

FF > HB > Shore > CU (but all of these comfortably sit in between 4.2 to 4.7 imo)

Best song is a tough one. Might be "The Shrine / An Argument" but I'm not confident in that at all considering they don't really have any bad songs.

‘The Shrine/ An Argument’ or ‘Mykonos’ for me maybe

Also: I’m obsessed with the Big Red Machine song featuring the FF singer ‘Phoenix’, that’s a glorious singalong and a half
