nice review Row, 3.9 sounds about right. very, very solid but doesn't quite touch his classic stuff imo

@sowing I am surprised he really only did his yelling thing once "AND SING!" on this album.

Yeah a few more of those sprinkled in at the right moments might have elevated this even more, but it's still incredible as it stands. I've never stanned this hard over a BE album so this is a new feeling to me. Even I'm Wide Awake needed time to grow on me, this just wrecked me from the start.

Fevers & Mirrors is their best still yup.

Cassadega is like a 3.5 compared to this honestly.

"Faraudo shares my passion for this. Feel the exact same, this is 100% his best work and phenomenal front to end."

I'm on a binge rn, will probably keep it going for at least a week.

Strongly agree with the statement about some of their best songs coming from EPs as well non-album singles. The strong disdain for People's Key makes me sad, but maybe it's my acid trip that really elevated the album for me lol. "Ladder Song" still wrecks me every time.

First half of this is being undersold itt so far. Just Once in the World, Mariana Trench, and One and Done all rule. I know some people aren't keen on Pan and Broom, but I like it a lot despite the melodic similarity to Forest Whitaker.

From there, it only gets better. Stairwell Song and Persona Non Grata is the best 1-2 punch I've heard all year. The final 3 songs all rule. Honestly if there's a sliiiight dip it happens for me between Tilt-A-Whirl and Hot Car, which I've seen other people praising.

But even those songs are great.

Goddamn what a fucking masterpiece.

one listen and rly don't see what all the fuss is about. then again, cassadaga is the only bright eyes album i like. i've heard his whole discog (barring the last one) and they're all prob like 2.5 for me with cassadaga being a 4

Gyro I would describe this as "an orchestra for the apocalypse", I'm surprised you don't like it more given the immense finality of it. I thought you ate that shit up just like me but I'm probably thinking of someone else.

I'm not a huge Oberst fan either, really it's just this and I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning. I was shocked when this got 2-3 songs in and just kept getting better and better. I had my 1 year old son and had to suppress the holy shit's from flying. Luckily he won't remember any of it!

Good job calling out all the duds Sowing! Pan and Broom, Tilt-A-Whirl, Hot Car all could have been cut and this would have only been strengthened... luckily it is so long I really can just ignore those tracks with no effect.

Edit: duds might be a bit strong of a word.. weak links, weaker, okay songs might be more fitting

That's the thing, they may be weaker compared to the rest of the songs here but they're still great lol. Like I feel no desire or need to skip them.

i do eat that shit up sowing, but i wasn't feeling this. tbf i wasn't feeling punisher much after hearing it once through but then i know the end hit me like a ton of brick on my second play, and more started revealing itself like graceland. i'm gonna give this another go, because i did enjoy moments on it. rn i'd say i like it much less than cassadaga but more than any of his other albums

Persona Non Grata has been out for something like 5 months now. I still love it as much as I did when I first heard it. I agree it’s a highlight, and that song’s longevity suggests good things about how this album will age.

Same thing happened to me with Punisher, Gyro. Hope this grows on you as well. Similar vibes across the board (loss & ending, as it could be applied to either a personal or global scale). The lyrics here are wrecking me right now. I'm just in sheer awe.

First song was weird but I like it. Second song is okay but what is that production? the vocals sound awful

"the vocals sound awful"

That's always been my issue with Bright Eyes or any Oberst project, but here you can really feel the passion and sincerity in a way I haven't since I'm Wide Awake

Honestly, the most surprising thing to me in this thread has been all the cassadaga love because that one has always been the one I don’t pay much attention to. Hope I can find in it what all of you apparently do. I’ve always loved four winds, but outside of that I’ve never returned.

took me years of listening to get into that album fully (and I still see it dismissed pretty much everywhere so I'm pleasantly surprised by this thread lol). I recommend everyone who was underwhelmed by it just give it a few dedicated listens, maybe with the lyrics and no distractions

sounds pretentious but Cass rewards investment more than any other BE imo. partly cos it's a lot less immediate
