I'd say the balance for the appeal of the band has gone:

Dogrel - 70% vocals/lyrics to 30% music

Hero's Death - 55% vocals/lyrics to 45% music

to maybe

Skinty - 40% vocals/lyrics to 60% music

early impression anyway

‘the couple’ and the closer floored me, still need more time with some of the first half but otherwise I think this is a fantastic progression

I expressed concerns that much more of the same repetitive punk could put them in a precarious position of being too glued to a sound, but skinty fia is about as much as I could have asked for

I do like that over the course of three albums they've completely changed up their sound yeah

The way the backing vocals change on the opener of the new one is chef’s kiss

tbh the way the whole song changes is what makes it interesting, for the longest time it fools you it is just a repetitive scene setting intro sort of tune

I love that they've really honed the harmonies and backing vocals from A Hero's Death, one of my favourite things about that album and they add so much here

‘probably not better than this’ [2]

people on RYM seem to be pressing ‘band were mid, this is their first good album’ but I really rate this one. Was top 20 of the last 10 years sort of level for me and I’m not ready to let go of that.

everyone seems to of the opinion also that ‘Living in America’ is bottom two and a poor song but that ones also incredible, dunno, people

They've been great since Dogrel, time will tell whether I prefer Skinty Fia or this but there isn't much in it right now

I haven't explored much of their music before. Maybe I should give it a go.

If you do I'd say go chronologically, Dogrel is their most immediate album and it'll show you just how much they've progressed over 3 albums

I think I'll do that, then. Thanks for the advice, Tunaboy.

I definitely love the new one on the back of the first two, I think it definitely hits harder because of the nature of the progression. which isn’t to say I’d necessarily like it less as a debut, but it’s made better by expanding on the earlier sound
