First song I was thinking “this is a bit much”, but by the closer I understood that these guys are just insane musicians. Discography seems to generally receive high regard - is there an underground consensus on what their best might be?

I dont think there is a concensus on that. It's an area of contestation among fans, at least on sput. I think Psalms is their best (as do other people), and other people think either this or Passages are their best. Those are the three answers I think you'll get most.
Although at this point I think this album would receive the most votes for best DS

I personally still think Passages is their best, but this one is their most technical and creative effort. I have most DS albums 5ed anyway. Band is just too good

yeah had this as a 4 but seeing as how I enjoy the thought of this album every time it comes to mind, and I can immediately replay it every time, it's gotta be at least a 4.5... prob a 5 soon tbh

I need to revisit their material outside of this one, as I remember hearing this A LOT in comparison (which is probably why it remains my favourite)

then again correlation / causation could be coming into play - maybe this one just WARRANTED those extra spins
either way I endeavour to find out with the promise of new material on the horizon
and will maybe check some other BDM too... like that new Brodequin (it's not exactly my area of expertise)
