The Lady A controversy is a little bit more complicated than that.



Silly they changed the name, but Lady Antebellum (now Lady A) had been using the abbreviated name "Lady A" on mercherndise and other outlets for years, AND had an agreement with the original artist that they were both allowed to share the name mutually.



Not until after Lady Antebellum decided to permenenatly change their name did the original artist demand compensation.



I don't think they needed to change their name, but the lawsuit is more complicated and the band is only "suing" the orignal artist because the orginal artist is now demanding $10M for the name. In reality, the band only wants the lawsuit thrown out.
