Can someone explain the appeal of this album, like I read the reviews for it and I still sit here and think this is so one-dimensional. I love the winter recordings and the atmosphere but like the song, lengths are an absolute chore to get through.

"Can someone explain the appeal of this album"

meditate. get lost in it. PdH's discog is about a parallel dimension called Paysage D'hiver where the world exists in shadows and swirling snow and ice. this is set in the middle of the journey, as the protagonist navigates a haunted forest between the Holly Oak (Steineiche) and the fortress dungeon (Kerker, Die Festung).

it's as claustrophobic and dark as a forest on the surface, but melodies and themes emerge deeper within the mix as you go on and your eyes adjust. each song proves to be unique with repeated listens, as choirs, synthesizer, violin, flute, chimes, and clean guitar all carry new themes across its runtime. "Im Winterwald" is majestic; "Stimmen im Wald" is foreboding; "Kaelteschauer" is enchanting...the story is told in moods as much as words.

it's about altered states of mind and becoming lost on a long journey, finding shapes in the blizzard of sound -- I've noticed motifs from Winterkalte show up again here in various places, which makes sense as they fall close to each other in the story. the violin from "Welt Aus Eis" (from S/T) is alluded to in "Le Reve Lucide", and the chanted opening of "Stimmen" points to the song "Einsamkeit". it's an experience that's been building for more than 20 years.

@Seven, you should turn that into a review.

@ckssr, I think they all are, each one stands on its own, could listen to any track from this in isolation and it'd be awesome, but they also work well in context with each other.

Listening to the album in parts can be forgiven then?

Will check this out because I loved the stuff I have heard and I think Darkspace is the best in the genre

Yeah, I'd say it's not an issue. If anything, try and make it through Flug, that's the exact halfway point.

Pretty obvious story progression there, thanks for that!

Kinda funny that "Alt" is still "Alt".
