"C'est la Vie rips, but feels the closest thing to feeling like a Fortress b-side to me"
Nah, it has too much swing on a consistent basis to be like anything on Fortess frankly

@Bowler
lmao I absolutely adore Tandem and think it's probably my favorite song off of Scurrilous, but that line is fucking hilarious. I have used the clip of him singing that to put over some fedora white knighting before.
Totally agree about Volition's drums too. Goddamn, those things are DEAFENING. Definitely my main critique of that album, along with Underbite's lyrical content being unbearable cringe (though the song itself rips)
@Casavir
It's definitely a bit swing-y but the little look we've had into their b-side content for their albums typically has them kinda using the same sound palette as the album proper but really playing around with the "feel", for lack of a better term. And to me, C'est La Vie and Tapestry are both sorta the logical links for me where I could believe that they were initially Fortress scraps, though not implying that's actually the case

You guys are 100% on the volition drums. I had never identified that before

I mean, if they were, that'd be kind of crazy considering how much less stilted they are rhythmically and compositionally. Blows anything on Fortress out of the water

C'est La Vie is Fortress-esque in that the melody that Rody is singing doesn't perfectly match up with what's happening instrumentally until the dramatic finale, and that happened a lot on Fortress. It does overall feel smoother than most of Fortress does. I don't have any theory to point to for that. Song rips though, still remember wearing it out when it first came out as a single.

From The Sky is one of the best songs the band has ever made.

I'm gonna get a lot of flak for this but Scurrilous, Volition, and Pacific Myth were such massive drops in quality compared to their first 2 albums. I can't quite put my finger on why but those later releases just don't even come close to hitting like the first 2.
That said, Palimpsest was a lot closer to the mark.

Sounds pretty spot on. I liked Volition a lot though.

Volition rules, Fortress is cool but very overrated by the fanbase from what I've seen. Scurrilous suffered from Arif dipping and Rody taking on lyrics role but it has some really great peaks, Pacific Myth suffered from them trying out something new w/ a release that really kind of flopped but also has great peaks (Caravan goated) Palimpsest is just a really strong album for any band that late in their career w/ the lineup shifts and struggles the singer has had w/ his voice, can't ask for much better for sure, and even at their worst this band has never really been bad for me.

@metalphil I think that's a normal sentiment, I feel the same at least. I do love a lot of those album, but Palimpsest, Fortress, and Kezia are def top 3, though not in that order exactly. I would have a hard time saying whether Palimpsest or Fortress are my favorite because they both meant a lot to me at VERY different points in my life.

Everyone has such different takes on ranking with this band, but I think general consensus agrees this one is great.
S Tier: Fortress, Palimpsest, Scurrilious
A Tier: Kezia
B Tier: Volition, Pacific Myth

as reflected across aggregates, the general consensus on PtH is and has always been
Top: Fortress/Kezia
Mid: Palimpsest/Volition
Bottom: Pacific Myth/Scurrilous
it also happens to be miraculously correct

I think in an alternate reality, where it's still Arif, Luke, Tim, Rody and Moe, the band went on to do even more amazing and highly acclaimed albums. Alas, it wasn't meant to be.

Pacific Myth is in its own tier as the only PTH album that is straight up not good. I've really enjoyed every other album at different points.
Glad that Palimpsest is getting the respect it deserves.

Well it's just an EP and it was more of an experiment, they were kind of writing it one by one as the months went on. Even though there's an overarching concept on it, that's very half-assed (then again, all of Rody's concepts are - if he was only half as smart as he thinks he is, he'd be VERY smart). I like Pacific Myth but only the original mixes though.

Listening to Volition and it is admittedly much better than I remember
EDIT: Overall theme for this album was extremely well-done imo. Their other albums I don't think the theme comes through as well.

I'll give a lot of credit to Rody for fleshing out the concept of mostly American revisionist history, I actually learned a lot reading the wiki pages for each topic the songs were written about on Palimpsest.
Pacific Myth has 2-3 great songs and 2-3 snoozers IMO. It was a fun experiment, but not much more than that.

I saw a couple recent live clips of the band and the lineup is almost unrecognizable
