Most of the time it's just a last respite before the inevitable drop off

“i thought this timeline had already played out and this album was supposed to be the success story?”
Weeell…

Johnny is right though, this album was heralded as a success story for his degrading voice when it dropped. He can probably pull it off again.

Maybe. i couldn’t watch the live video posted on the previous page, so i dunno how it’s sounding tour-wise. I’m glad other people dig this and the band have been able to continue, but from the moment i tried, his voice immediately repelled me. If it’s getting rougher with time, i dunno

This was definitely their big comeback, but dude can't stay healthy. Hard not to lose faith in them being anything more than a studio band at this point.

I am 100% okay with that

Why do you think he's not healthy Mars? Not countering you, genuinely curious.

Throat health maybe, dude blows out his voice every tour

Lot of reports and rumors in and out of this thread that he sounds worn, as well as a handful of accounts of him blowing out his voice on tour. He's relied more on backing tracks for parts he's unable to/doesn't feel comfortable singing. Definitely doesn't help that he's already had to reckon with one major surgery already either and is still struggling to stay consistent for a full run.

Ahh yeah that tracks. I feel for the guy.

Oh yeah I want nothing more than for the guy to keep healthy, but the track record isn't inspiring confidence right now unfortunately.

Guess I'm not sure if I'll ever see them again live, but I'm glad I got to see them at their prime throughout the years.
April 14th 2008 - Chiodos & The Fall of Troy opened. Fortress launch tour. FoT played a ton of Doppelganger. Bliss.
Sept 15 2009 - In Flames. A relatively unknown Between the Buried and me opened, then PtH, then Killswitch Engage. Delirious with high fever. Still ruled.
March 29 2018 - Thank You Scientist, Closure in Moscow playing First Temple in it's entirety. Protest played Fortress in its entirety because this was the 10 year anniversary tour. One of the best shows of my life.
Sept 14th 2018 - PtH opening for Coheed & Cambria. Venue too big, sound wasn't great, but not a bad show.
No longer much of a fan, Fortress was their peak for me & then my tastes have changed over the years. Great guys though.

It feels like it is the genius and the curse of where Rody writes his vocal parts. I am a baritone who stretched out well into tenor range, and the power and range he sings at is impossible for a normal person and extremely difficult for his natural skill set. In Palimpsest, the vocal performance feels like an absolute high-wire act; you can feel the strain and challenge the songs present in real time. As a result, feels like too much to ask for someone to perform this shit regularly, I mean fuck me.

That fortress 10 year show was wild. I had to go straight from work in dress clothes and had a wild time

The Fortress 10 year show was legendary
|
| |
Yeah honestly. Seeing that show, seeing the single album that got me into prog metal played live 10 years after I heard it, flawlessly, with a pumped crowd...that was a surreal moment and one that made me OK with whatever happened to/with the band moving forward. It wrapped a nice pretty bow on my fandom for the band. Completely satisfied, I don't feel the urge to try get into their other albums that I'm not a fan of, or think one way or the other about their evolution, lineup change, etc. Fortress is legendary and I got to see those good boys rip 'er live and have a ton of fun doing so.

Man I love scurrilous, but that was also my first album from them so I am eternally boased
|

First three albums are all basically flawless

Album Rating: 4.0
Nah I mean Scurrilous is fine but it's pretty easily their worst album.
Looking at some of those lyrics and delivery on them and calling that album flawless is p wild. Still has some really strong shit tho, Moonlight/Dunsel/Tongue Splitter are all pretty underrated Protest songs imo and Hair Trigger is a blast even if the lyrics and their cigarette quitting metaphor is pretty dumb. WHAT ABOUT THOSE RAINY NIGHTS IN LONDON
