Gotta agree that the b-sides are magnificent and some of the best songs they've ever done. Insane they didn't make the cut lol
Oddly enough, plaything this album and the b-sides on Clone Hero made me appreciate them even more. I think Palimpsest overall is their third best behind Kezia and Fortress. The songwriting is more streamlined and the themes provide a nice throughline that I think has been missing since Fortress. Not that Volition or Scurrilous were bad by any means, but there were a decent number of songs that felt a little flat and some riff progressions that were a little too obtuse. Pacific Myth was.....pretty meh outside of the amazing Caravan.
If I had some complaints about this one, it's that there are some unnecessary moments that undercut some of the raw emotion (the final seconds of From the Sky in particular are baffling to me) but it's such a strong effort from a band this far into their career in a genre where the wheels usually fall off pretty quickly. Canary is probably the weakest song on here, but they unfortunately are usually pretty bad at choosing lead singles. They almost always deliver the goods

Scurrilous is hard for me to rate because the first four songs are career highlights but then the album pretty much loses me until Sex Tapes. I think Volition is better

The ending of From The Sky completely blew me away when that single released, but maybe I'm just a sucker for the vocal acrobatics. Big fucking moment

Nah, I've got
Fortress> Kezia >Palimpsest>Volition>Scurrilous>>>>>Pacific Myth
Ending of From the Sky is incredible, I just hate the actual outro which is that pointless guitar noodle. It's just too extraneous for me and the song should've ended with that big vocal moment fading out or something

Scurrilous > Volition, otherwise agreed.

Scurrilous and Volition might actually be pretty much equal for me. The former has much higher highs and lower lows, the latter is mostly consistently good

Some of Scurrilous just feels like their most scattershot work, like you all said. Volition is really solid with Adler but it seems like you have to really be into that sound for it to top the ratings.

See, the outro is so unnecessary you forgot about it lol
Scurrilous is definitely the most scattershot. Those opening four songs are so damn good then it falls off a cliff

I mean the whole song obviously but the groove and funk the bass line gets into about halfway through Gardenias is undeniable
Also since everybody is doing ratings Kezia>Fortress=Palimpsest>Volition>Scurrilous (haven't listened to Pacific Mist tbh)

You say this as if Termites and Tapestry isn't some of their best work.
