Obscura is such a technical/compositional accomplishment and one of my favorite albums, yet there are still days this might be my fave guts

This album had them riff open a portal to another alien dimension
Obscura was their return from that dimension after experimenting with alien DNA

Obscura is its own singular piece of music, but Erosion is a blueprint on how to make a death metal record: brĂ¼tal slammy parts that give way to unsettling grooves.
I love how the piano intro in Condemned to Obscurity leads to the guitar riffs instead of being tacked on to a regular death metal song. Gorguts are so good at melodic intros.

I liked their debut. It was a solid and groovy, if unadventurous, death metal album from start to finish. Then Erosion came along and erupted in a way that obliterated the first record. It shredded, grooved (in its own odd ways), and kicked tons of ass. Over the intervening 27 years (!!) tracks 3-8 have faded in impact for me. The songwriting doesn't maintain the level of the opening cuts "With Their Flesh, He'll Create" and "Condemned to Obscurity". Still, Gorguts remains one of my very favorite DM bands.
