Over the years I've found myself more and more distancing from Thrice. One of those post-hardcore/alt rock bands I loved in high school but just can't get into in the same way anymore. I still think they have some very solid individual tracks, but as far as entire albums go... not so much. Water is honestly 50 times better than Fire, which honestly sounds generic as hell to me outside of The Flame Deluge

Also didn't know people disliked Child of Dust and Kings Upon The Main, which I thought were easily two of the best and most distinguishable tracks on this whole Alchemy Index project

i don't listen to them much anymore either tbh. if i want to listen to thrice i'm more likely to reach for to be everything is to be nowhere or something rather than their older stuff that used to be really influential for me.

Air is definitely inconsistent. has some of their best songs but also has "as the crow flies" which is one of the most pointless songs ever

Yeah same here, I tend to gravitate more towards To Be Everywhere nowadays.

Air is almost my favourite, but I think Water is a bit more consistent. Like you said, As the Crow Flies is on Air, and it's probably my least favourite song on the whole project. Still, Daedelus and Silver Wings are soooo good. Sky Is Falling and Broken Lungs are also pretty great but they've kinda worn off of me

I wish I enjoyed To Be Everywhere... more. In terms of their post hiatus stuff I gravitate toward Palms. It's less consistent than To Be Everywhere, but highlights like The Dark, Just Breathe, The Grey, A Branch In The River, and Blood on Blood all sound like they could have come from Beggars (stylistically, not lyrically, because lol).

To Be Everywhere has maybe 1-2 songs I still return to although I'll admit it's much easier to listen to it all the way through - when I do return to it - than Palms, where the tracks are either phenomenal (the aforementioned) or terrible (Hold Up a Light, My Soul, and even Beyond the Pines is extremely overrated).

This thing is stunning and Vhessiu turned out even better. Both are classic.

"I think Beggars was his peak for writing. I could just read the lyrical booklet of that album without hearing the music and still come away moved."

Strongly agree.

I have the album cover tattooed on me outlined in black and filled in with Red and Blue to represent the Fire Water albums

I don't think Thrice ever really released a masterpiece. They just have a lot of good records, and some really good records.

Vheissu was a masterpiece for its time

think the first part of gyro's comment is spot on. 14-yo me would be shocked and appalled, but I drifted away from Thrice hugely over the years and Thursday pretty much took their spot in my affections - TBE/Palms were so outright mediocre which didn't really help. still love Beggars and select songs from their others but I very rarely listen to a full album anymore

Yeah Thursday and especially O'Brother supplanted Thrice for me but every now and then I go on a good old fashioned early 2000s kick.

Well, it certainly seemed like a masterpiece to me years back. But I don't think it's quite survived the test of time. There are some immaturities in it that I think the band ironed out over the next few records. Alchemy Index has aged better imo.

Probably agreed; Vheissu is special in many ways, but its dated and/or immature qualities only hurt it more for how much of a statement album it tries to be. This and Beggars aren't quite as flooring at their best, but I think they'll hold up better now (maybe) - would say I felt a discog binge coming on, but Rowan's reservations about jamming full Thrice albums today are painfully relatable (esp. given how bizarrely well Thursday have aged).

Artist and Illusion are still the best Thrice albums imo; they wear their awkward qualities on their sleeves

I must say that I agree with this. a bit of a shame really because I used to absolutely love that record and these days I don't really ever get the feeling I want to jam it. same for most of Thrice honestly, although Beggars is one helluva album.

also agree with you there Johnny on Thursday. that band was always a bit more artsy fartsy and punky in their approach which I still bloody well respect.

I still don't really like Artist, it's like four great songs and then a bunch of filler to me. always baffled me but I think it was one of those albums you had to be there for - I hopped on the wagon with Image of the Invisible. Illusion is way stronger as an album even if Dustin sounds hilarious on some of it

their first 3 albums were jammed to death by me as a teen. I will always have a special place in my heart for those records.

Yes to every part of this, even down to how I got into the band. Artist is vastly overrated but I imagine many people here grew up listening to it.
