i just dont know how someone can like every other ABR album but then not this? It has all the same elements, except probably less "exploration" bullshit like watered-down chinese instrument sections that exist for the sake of being able to say they experimented. There's almost no BS here which I appreciate, but the album should also be like 35-40 mins

I think a lot of it kind of stems from that tbh. To me this is essentially just a somewhat weaker rehash of things they've already done, and as with any band that has a tendency to put out repeat material eventually its going to be hard to recapture that same energy. Its still enjoyable since they do occasionally whip out a p sweet riff but otherwise it just passes by imo

I never solidly got into an ABR record before this, including Messengers (on release, the china cymbal drove me insane), Constellations, and Phantom Anthem.

This one I can listen back-to-front and feels fresh. Probably since I kinda dodged their discography.

Just listened to fragile and boy is it rough but there's actually one or two guitar sections that stood out to me. The s/t isn't on streaming

The thing is though from what I can tell the bands fans don't mind AT ALL that they don't innovate or change at all. They don't seem like the kind of people who really think about that stuff in my experience.

And I'm no fan of the band, I've actually called the mundane before even when others were praising their 2013 and 2015 albums. Believe it or not, I remember people saying that ABR were going experimental at the time. I have no idea what the hell they were talking about if you go back and listen to those albums.

Nocte what's the difference between ABR's Guardians and Heaven Shall Burn's Of Truth and Sacrifice in your mind, and why does one succeed over the other? I can't help but compare the two albums.

That ep is worse than fragile. Probably a good thing it's forgotten about. No clue why experimental is associated with the band in any way what so ever. They change up some melodies from time to time but they're hardly doing anything groundbreaking.

The fact that they haven't had a lineup change since 2006 is pretty incredible.

Not to be spiteful (rather, consider this an honest effort to understand your question here). I've reviewed both albums - at length. Have you read the other review or are you trying to push to comparison points together that (apart from the metal genre umbrella) aren't alike? If your question (from what I can gather as far as context goes) is based on levels of quality, the simple answer here (and frustrating on your end) is "better". No doubt that HSB's 2020 album is looong… but it's built on better than decent musicianship, diverse tonal ranges and somewhat explorative ideas. Where ABR fails, HSB succeeds.

Not sure if I answered or remotely understood what you wanted in comparing these chalk and crayon releases - but I tried.

“Space Jester - I agree with you. I used to overlook Thrill Seeker, but recently that album has quickly become one of my favorites from ABR. I really enjoy the technical and raw sound of Architects' Ruin and Nightmares. For that same reason, I really like Thrill Seeker.”

I wish everyone would have the same revelation as you

I also agree Architects’ early stuff was way better
