Closing three tracks are great, but I did almost turn it off before I got there

The tracklist is very even in quality IMO; I find it surprising that you'd feel strongly about the last three songs without finding anything to enjoy from the rest. 'Can't Do Much' and 'War' are particularly great.

Have yet to hear this but American Weekend is my favourite Waxahatchee

The way I'd describe this album is it nearly does what I want it to
So a bit frustrating

It’s not to say I outright dislike the rest but I wasn’t grabbed until those last three. All I remember is that I didn’t like Hell

@Doof: That's how I felt at first but then one day everything just snapped right into place and made sense. I don't know what listen you're on (or if you've already exhausted several run throughs), but it clicked hard on my third listen. Sometimes I still wish this would go more places instrumentally, which might have bumped it to a 5, but her voice is so unique and the lyrics are so good that I couldn't deny the 4.5. This is a tough album to rate on its technical merits because it's so dependent on the listener connecting with the lyrics and aesthetic vibe - which I just really happened to.
@Anatelier: Understandable - everything blurring together and not sticking out is definitely a fair enough reason to dislike something. I wonder if it will grow on you or not -- I don't think this has the magnetism of Honey Harper, but there's definitely some subtle lyrics/melodies here that seem to become more relatable with repetition.

Only two full listens - was probably going to give it one more but if nothing particularly changed then I know me, that'd probably be that

My one listen impression is good to very good, better than Ivy Tripp. Maybe it’ll grow.

@Doof: Certainly - makes little sense to continue if nothing is beginning to stick. The reason I bothered a 2nd/3rd times was because I could tell something was there.
@Boney: Good to hear, let us know! A Boney country stamp of approval always means something.

I mean listen three if nothing else I'll usually find if there are one or two songs to return to/download
Like anatelier there were patches of the album I preferred to others

I will say this wasn’t quite as country as I’d been made to believe/hoped it would be (it just kind of feels like she took her singer/songwriter indie style and put slightly more country/Americana influence behind it and her singing style is very 90s alt-rock, and a lot of it feels very folky too which I understand is/was already part of her palette) but perhaps that’s just nitpicking. That said it does feel genuine, perhaps if it had been more full-blown country I would’ve found it inauthentic.

She sounds exactly like a female Ryan Adams here to me
Not super authentic and she has a boner for Dylan phrasing at times, plus quite commercial/shiny
Yeah, very fem Adams
Kinda 'alt country straight off the clothes rail'

I guess that makes sense - I like Adams’ music but he always did feel a bit like “country via rock” to me too, more so than many alt-country artists.
All that aside though what really matters is whether the songs are good and I can’t really judge that yet.

the country element sounds a little affected but this is pleasant - again, similar to Adams a lot of the time, bit of a female Petty/Dylan twang to dirty up her voice occasionally, stop it getting TOO saccharine (it's still a bit too sweet though)
I do hear that 90s vibe too
I mean I couldn't like Aimee Mann's stuff and hate this, that wouldn't be fair, but nothing is screaming essential - listening again now

third listen complete...yeah
sorry, tempted to 2.5 but it's a 'comfort zone' genre for me, one that calms my spirit, so a generous/biased 3

Yeah listening to Hell now and while it's probably one of the weaker songs, I still enjoy it. The guitars keep it afloat and I like how invested she gets in the chorus by the end of the song. Maybe I'm just too head over heels for her vocals because it's hard for me to find much fault with any of these songs. This whole experience is just so...solid. Each song started in the 3.5 range and unraveled their layers slowly. Now they're all 4's with a few 4.5's. No perfect 5's, but the consistent excellence here is astounding, rare, and worth celebrating.
And Ruby Falls is quietly becoming my second favorite. The closer is still tops.
