For better or worse

Lady gaga, billie eilish, brittany spears, Mariah Carey, christina Aguilera, beyonce, azealia banks, jessie reyez, ariana grande etc etc etc, virtually every notable pop star you can name has an immediately recognizable voice with distinct ticks and personality.

The only ones that dont are ones that become forgotten

In fact I'd say in the pursuit of riches and fame in pop taking some dance lessons is about the absolute bare minimum in terms of dedication to craft. I wouldn't call that admirable, I'd call that an expectation. You cant just flounder your way to stardom.

one kiss and electricity were solid enough to sell me on her. wifey digs so I dig. learned some Lipa songs for her concert as a surprise but ended up bailing so I learned them for nothing. this was nice but that's cuz of familiarity.

This really does end on a bit of a weaker note but then I kinda respect it too. Have always hated that saying. Good In Bed grew on me quiet a bit, though it isn't one of my favourites here.

Dua Lipa sings like her voice is strictly commercial(tm) and like she doesn't sing in the shower for fun or anything outside of a studio

new nic jaar is amazing yeah dean blunt is equal parts brilliant and irreconcilably terrible ideas and i couldn't make it through more than 4 or 5 songs of that new comp but all of them were firmly in the latter camp

I mean idk if it's just UK not translating to NA going on here but I definitely hear personality in her. The same way that when I hear reggaeton vocalists I'm sure a lot of them have way more personality to them than their accent allows me to digest. Maybe I'm just too familiar with the I-go-to-Boomtown-every-year and get-drunk-at-pride-parades-and-keep-snogging-my-friends festival girls here that she seems to speak so much to to the point she's instantly recognisable to me.

Also on your list pots, Christina Aguilera has a distinctive voice but she has no personality whatsoever. She's always been a D-grade Mariah Carey copycat trying to coax by on vocal skill alone to the point she overuses annoying vocal inflections that kill her tracks. Would you say someone like Pink, or Kelly Clarkson have personality? They have recognisable voices, but hell I couldn't tell you who or what they represent at all. Out of your list all except Billie Eilish (and idk the jessie reyes girl so not sure there) have had long careers of up to 30 years before Dua Lipa - personality in most cases comes from familiarity and reinforcing ideas, I don't think voice has as much to do with it.

Well first of all Im not saying i personally enjoy any of those people, that wasnt the point, so I cant argue about if Aguilera is good or not.

But on that list I was talking explicitly about voice. When I say personality in reference to voice i mean it in abstract. as I said, recognizability, uniqueness, character, whatever makes a singer unmistakable. All those vocalists are unmistakable. If you showed me a dua lipa song I'd never heard before it would probably take me about 10 guesses and it would probably take even more if she wasnt relevant enough at the moment that it would be a safe shot in the dark.

I did mention personality in the literal sense before that too tho so understand how that got conflated. Plenty of pop stars have no literal personality while having lots of personality to their voices. That's better than having no literal personality AND no personality to your voice like dua lipa.

I also dont agree about the reggaeton comparison at all because, like with a lot of british singers, there is no notably distinguishable accent to their singing voice to form a barrier to begin with.

Charli xcx, dua lipa, rita ora... I would literally never know any of these chicks had accents without hearing their speaking voice or reading where they are from.
