Is it like Britain where youre sneered at for showing even a hint of patriotism?

Yes I guess so. But then with our lovely own brand of orange sunshine down-to-Earthness.

Where are you from again Ben? Don't know if I ever knew this...

Haha yeah I figured. So you know the feeling then. Where does that even come from, that anti-nationalism? Perhaps for a fear of what nationalism can do if it gets out of hand (which happens relatively quickly)?

Yep thats definitely where it comes from especially in Europe, it's just particularly pronounced in Britain recently as any sign of patriotism is automatically equated with Brexit support, which is obviously a grievous evil

@osmark Wiegedood is Belgian I believe, but indeed in the dutch language.

I may be the exception here, but I actually really like my country. We may not have the best music scene out there, but when I look around me I see so many things our country actually does very well and better than our neighbors.

Hihi, it still scares me each time I see it Nocte.

Ah yeah I guess Brexit would have a big impact on that for sure Ben.

And same here Scheumke, I love my country too, but showing this isn't something we're really used to here I think.

I think that's because we are a very down to earth people. On average dutchies despise arrogance and the "I'm better than everyone" winners mentality that especially America is famous for. We are not outwardly proud (unless it comes to sports), but we know between us that we actually have a lot of things very well taken care off over here.

Check the new Duivel by the way guys, some more cool Dutch bm! There are some great tracks on it, it's nicely old school.

It's the same in Sweden basically. We have an unspoken law called jantelagen where the attitude is "no one is better than anyone", much like the dutch I presume. I guess we're all very proud of Sweden and all, but waving flags and being all uppity about it isn't exactly everyone's cup of tea. If anything I'm more proud of the ideals and institutions of social democracy than the actual country and other aspects of Swedish culture and that is something that is quite fragile and could change due to too much nationalistic thinking imo, like Brexit. will I cheer the national team during football cups however? fuck yes I will!

''and that is something that is quite fragile and could change due to too much nationalistic thinking imo, like Brexit.'' 100% relatable. Your whole explanation is but this part in particular resonates with me. It seems to be very fragile indeed.

As an American, I can tell you that shit is indoctrinated in early life, that we're better than everyone. I learned it in school, on the news, and from my parents. But we only do three things the best, in my opinion: military, prepackaged snacks, and television. And it's hard not to have the best military with the ridiculous budget we give it.

after 9/11 in particular it was nothing but nationalist country music pop songs in my small town, and we had to learn to sing them in elementary school. Obligatory patriotism is part of our culture. :|

I will admit, I have no exceptional love for The Netherlands. Nationalism isn't a particularly appealing thing to me, especially considering how populist parties, of which we have at least two, instrumentalize it sow division, demonize immigrants and gain political success. Then again, I will also admit The Netherlands is a neatly organized country, perhaps a little too much sometimes, and the neuroticism that typifies its societal model, part of me greatly appreciates, in the sense that one can appreciate a neatly organized cutlery drawer for example.
