Hell yeah. Love that album. Fuzzy and brilliant - like a technicolor dream come to life. Kinokoteikoku puts out some incredible dream pop as well, on the topic of *Japanese* Dream Pop. Beach House, of course, is great as well.



But Otokotachi No Wakare tops all of them. Its pretentiously long, but its length is justified - I gave it a 5 for a reason.

A good culture reinforces good virtues. And it shows in the behavior of the citizens. Good virtues like modesty, moderation, cleanliness, hard-work, and wholesomeness. Politeness is a huge deal in Japan. People bow and smile to one another. And whoever doesn't will stick out like a sore thumb. Cleanliness is a huge deal in Japan. The streets are super and clean, and so are the interior of their houses. Cleanliness and politeness are just super ingrained in their culture. Japan is a good example of a high civilization that looks like a high civilization.

America reinforces excess, edginess, trashiness, silliness, laziness, vulgarity, and violence. If you look at American media, it makes perfect sense. Hip-hop and rock music is full of bragging. Music subject matter includes swearing, partying, being rich, acting silly, addressing haters, and just living a wild hedonistic lifestyle. Drake, Eminem, Lil Wayne, Miley Cyrus, Nirvana. You take a walk in the streets and see people flaunt the most ridiculous looking outfits. Hollywood is full of violence and torture. Hostel, Saw, Halloween, Final Destination, Requiem for a Dream, Joker. Violence is glorified. It gets celebrated when an upcoming movie is announced to be rated R. You look at the 7 deadly sins and they're all glorified in American media. It's no surprise that America has by far the highest count of serial killers in the world. And it's no surprise that guns are legal in America. It's no surprise that Americans are the fattest among first world countries.

The system is flawed. The whole volume weighted thing is only important/necessary when confronted with releases of significant obscurity (or perhaps 'relative', as defining 'significant' is erm, taxing). When you're talking about the more well-known releases with larger sample sizes it starts to fall apart. 20k ratings vs 40k? By that point, who cares?

I've noticed Funeral made the top 100 of all-time despite having a 3.97 average, for me that shouldn't happen. Black Saint should be higher, it has enough ratings - it shouldn't be 'punished' for having less total rating/listeners, that's the fault of the community, not the music itself.

Yeah anyway, I don't tend to check live recordings but maybe I will check this. I like this band.

Isn't RYM's rankings dictated by the sheer volume of ratings? So a release with a lower average can (and sometimes is) ranked more favourably than one with a higher average. I'm saying this is a good thing, sometimes, but not when you start hitting the heady heights of thousands upon thousands of ratings. Why does it matter that Black Saint has a 'mere' 20k ratings vs 60k for OKC? (or whatever example you want to use).

How is the weighting calculated exactly then?... as in what criteria is used to assign a value to an individual (or collection of) ratings.

they do not disclose how albums are ranked in order to prevent tampering

as for individual users:

your ratings can become deweighted if your distribution is either too high (see users who have almost or entirely 5s and nothing else; also users who have almost or entirely sub-2 ratings) or if you are caught participating in what they deem to be targeted tampering/manipulation campaign/other malicious activity/etc

new accounts require some time and a certain level of activity to become weighted (by default they are not)

accounts that havent been active in years become (at least partially?) deweighted

That's way more complicated than I had imagined. Some of that sounds reasonable, although I still find it hard to believe that Arcade Fire's funeral was 'liked' by such a truly select and upstanding group of elite users, thus vaulting it into contention despite it's 'paltry' average. Lol. Maybe their undisclosed weighting reasons are more sinister?

Funeral is good by the way.

I like RYM's database, although I will probably never use it for ratings despite it being way more comprehensive than Sput (unless this place dies it's final death one day).
