The emotion prevents this from being his worst acoustic stuff (the two after it are worse thanks to that) but every other acoustic album before this one is better imo

But yeah his three worst albums are all in a row so that's not exactly encouraging for future material

I'm actually really happy he did another album with Julie Doiron. It was nice to get another modern acoustic Mount Eerie album but without all the baggage the last two had. I hope he goes back to doing weirdo shit again bc I love that too, but I still can't deny my love for the raw plain acoustic stuff and the Lost Wisdom Pt.2 release was very nice and welcome, for me at least.

"But the lyrics here are so personal and confessional and eye opening and almost perverted to listen in on, and that really ruins the desire to listen back to it."
Exactly this

Lyrics can't carry an album hmmmm....what about concept albums? Or ones that deal with stories or even songs that have specific stories?
Whether you enjoy this album or not, it's definitely "carried" by it's lyrical content, it's hard to argue that's not the focus here. Ig your point is those albums aren't as successful because they're relying on the lyrics to "carry" it. Interesting argument but I think it's based on individual opinions

I'm firmly in the camp that says music exists to be evocative; emotionless technicalities do nothing for me. With that said I can see both sides of this "debate", if you want to call it that. In terms of conjuring emotions this does it exceedingly well - of course they are not pleasant emotions, so it is undesirable to continue to subject yourself to it. Musically, it is absolutely lackluster and bare bones as it should be. To accompany this kind of music with anything other than lost mumbles/disoriented acoustic plucking would seem disingenuous. It conveys the grief-stricken thoughts of a man dealing with death in real time. Thus the real question becomes, is it possible for an album to be a masterpiece, yet be entirely unenjoyable? My answer is yes, because not all art is pleasant. Obviously, how you rate/score albums on this site might deviate from that, because what is the point of rating something a 4-5 / 5 that you can't even listen to and enjoy? As someone on this site once said, words fail...ratings fail.

the answer certainly is a resounding YES in literature and film and possibly other media im ignorant of, i dont see why people would argue otherwise for music
